The First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education Directorate is dedicated to supporting systemic change across the education system to eliminate the systemic achievement gap between First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and all other students in Alberta.
The Directorate leads the department in fostering and maintaining relationships with key First Nations, Métis governments, and Inuit governments, communities and education organizations. The Directorate supports department efforts to ensure that all students, teachers and education leaders in Alberta have foundational knowledge regarding First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives, histories, culture and contemporary issues faced by First Nation, Metis and Inuit people, including the legacy of residential schools. These objectives aim to ensure that First Nations, Metis and Inuit students are successful in the educational system and are in the best position to meaningfully participate in the provincial economy and have a successful life.

Alberta Education is looking for a Director, Partnerships, Assurance & Research to join our team.
The Partnerships, Assurance and Research Branch leads the development and implementation of strategic partnerships and agreements with First Nations, Métis and Inuit governments and education organizations. The branch also leads Alberta Education on Indigenous education research, assurance for department First Nations, Métis and Inuit grants and data stewardship and analysis of First Nations, Métis and Inuit student data.
In this role, your main accountabilities will be:
– Leading the development of system-wide protocols for engaging with First Nations, Métis and Inuit education stakeholders on strategic priorities with implications for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and learning outcomes
– Playing a leadership role working with First Nations education stakeholders to ensure the availability of professional development to build systemic capacity to address the learning need of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students
– Leading and supporting Alberta Education to develop and implement a consistent operational approach to Indigenous education matters
– Leading Alberta Education on research, assurance and data stewardship for Indigenous education in Alberta
– Supporting the Executive Director to achieve the mandate and goals of the Executive Director’s Office and to oversee the operations of the Partnerships Assurance and Research Branch
The successful candidate will have:
– Extensive knowledge of legislation and policies affecting First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples as it relates to education
– Well-developed leadership, communication and collaboration skills
– The ability to analyze and interpret data and financial information
– Negotiation and mediation know-how
– Strong project and team management skills
– Strong human relations skills, including an ability to build trust, relationships, goodwill, and a sense of common purpose
– Strong decision-making abilities and proven ability to manage politically sensitive issues
– The ability to demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and respect for other cultures, viewpoints and processes
Qualifications
Requirements:
- University degree in a related field (such as Education, Business, Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences), and
- A minimum of six years progressively responsible experience in:
– Leading teams,
– Managing projects, and
– Managing program budgets
Assets:
- Experience working with First Nations, Métis or Inuit communities, organizations or similar environments
- Experience working with legislation and policies affecting First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples as it relates to education
Equivalencies:
- Related experience or education will be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

The director is expected to be aware of current and anticipated priorities and trends internal and external to government. The director is in regular communication with executive leadership to help understand, plan for and anticipate changing priorities or circumstances. The director in turn helps staff to understand, prepare for and execute activities required to respond to changing priorities and circumstances in a timely and effective manner.
BUILD COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENTS
The director recognizes and balances the competing interests of multiple clients, stakeholder groups and partners in order to resolve issues that may be local in nature or may exist province wide. The director works hard to foster regular open and honest communication and demonstrates transparency and accountability. These practices are also apparent in the management and operations within the branch itself.
SYSTEMS THINKING
The director understands that Indigenous student success depends on identifying and addressing long-standing and complex systemic barriers (e.g. funding disparity, geographic and socio-economic). Some of these barriers stem from within the education system itself while others lie within other systems, including health, legal, social service systems and jurisdictional boundaries. Recognizing the systemic nature of these barriers, the director must encourage and lead collaboration across these systems, aligning and integrating policy and strategic approaches wherever possible.
DRIVE FOR RESULTS
The director is an advocate for continuous improvement in the management of the directorate, department and the education system. The director is responsible for ensuring that time, staff, resources and budgets are utilized in a manner that delivers measurable outcomes over the short, medium and long-term. These outcomes are all ultimately intended to help ensure Indigenous students succeed in school and in life.
Salary
$4,037.95 to $5,127.61 bi-weekly ($105,390 to $133,830 annually)
Notes
This is a permanent, full-time position working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
This position is based in Edmonton and may require occasional travel throughout the province. Candidates are required to have access to reliable transportation.
Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary. This competition may be used to fill future roles at the same or lower classifications.
