Position Summary
JOB PURPOSE:
The Director of Business Development Technology is a senior level role responsible for the underlying technical solution supporting all large and/or complex capital projects in the Americas region. In addition this individual is responsible for the work product of a team of experienced business development technologists.
SCOPE:
The position will directly manage five senior business development technologists who will in turn work closely with sales and commercial business development towards winning new business for the Americas region. This is a leadership position within the organization which will have direct influence over the strategic focus in terms of technology selection, contracting strategy, and project development within the Americas.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
The position reports to the Vice President of the Americas Large Projects Business Development organization.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Lead a team comprised of senior Business Development technologists in the development of cost competitive proposals for large and/or complex capital projects in the Americas region.
- Analyze or oversee the analysis of options for the purification, separation, production, or decarbonization of hydrogen/syngas and atmospheric gases plant performance metrics including efficiency, recovery, total installed cost, and utility requirements.
- Support sales opportunities by pre-screening various process concepts to develop an optimal solution within the constraints of an opportunity. Provide customer technical selling support for early-stage opportunities.
- Responsible for the interfaces between Business Development and Engineering as well as Research & Development. Develop constructive relationships with Linde Engineering, R&D, and 3rd party technology providers. Understand the trade-offs between various technology offerings and project execution approaches.
- Responsible for the scope definition used for proposal development and coordinating proposal development efforts between engineering and operations organizations. Ensure total cost of ownership is fully considered for early-stage decisions impacting process and equipment design. Solicit feedback and input from Operations towards this end.
- Establish relationships with key technology suppliers and vendors in support of business development objectives including technical offering and equipment sourcing. Lead or provide oversight of technology evaluation/assessment of emerging technologies and competitive intelligence efforts.
- Review and provide input for key supplier and customer agreements including product pricing structures, performance guarantees, execution schedules as well as feedstock and product quality requirements.
- Lead or participate in meetings with customers and suppliers to present and discuss concepts.
- Provide stewardship and market insight for technologies used within Linde and industry knowledge of supplier, customer, and competitor processes.
- Travel domestically and internationally as needed to support projects (up to 25% of time)

Required Skills
- Expert knowledge in process concepts and technologies currently used within Linde. Understanding and awareness of alternative and competing technologies available.
- The ability to price various options and present cost comparisons in an easily understood format using Excel spreadsheets.
- Working knowledge of financial analysis in support of setting pricing and comparing project economics of different plant design options.
- Experience with process simulation software and ability to adapt to alternate programs.
- Ability to distill complex technical and economic/financial analyses into elegant and effective summaries for senior leadership.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written.
- Ability to define technical scope based on meeting a customer’s needs and applying available technology from Linde’s suite of technologies or from key technical suppliers/partners to develop a winning solution.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of programs.
- Experience in the preparation of technical proposals
Plus Skills
- Extensive knowledge of traditional large-scale syngas and hydrogen production technologies, including steam methane reformers (SMR’s), autothermal reformers (ATR’s), and partial oxidation (POX).
- Working knowledge of electrolysis, amine treating, adsorption processes, membranes, and cryogenic processes for purification, separation, and liquefaction including air separation.
- Working knowledge of technologies used in the manufacture of syngas chemical derivatives including methanol and ammonia.
- Hands on operational experience with the ability to address emerging plant operational issues.
- Experience in preparing technical risk assessments
- Plant commissioning and startup experience
- Experience evaluating capital project economics and pricing is a strong plus
Education/Registration/Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
- 20+ years’ experience in air separation or hydrogen/syngas production technologies
- A PE license is considered a plus
- MBA is considered a plus
- Experience in developing and executing large or complex projects from a project manager, or technical lead/manager role
- Some field experience a plus
