INTRO
The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) is a federal initiative to clean-up low-level radioactive wastes situated in the Municipality of Port Hope and the Municipality of Clarington. The project involves remediating a large number of contaminated sites to established clean-up criteria and consolidating the waste in a new engineered mound (one in each community). The remediation and construction aspects of the project are subject to Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) hearing and environmental approvals. The PHAI has a very high public profile and is a top priority for the Government of Canada and the Port Hope area communities. The project is sponsored by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), and led by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL).

In the upcoming Co-op Student work term, the Historic Waste Program Management Office’s Port Hope Project branch will be involved in ongoing close out activities for the Port Granby project. The activities will be mainly filing documentation and close out material into CNL’s corporate filing system. There may be instances that will require work in the project field.

RESPONSIBILITIES
We are therefore seeking to hire an Environmental Remediation student for a co-op term to support the Port Hope Construction & Remediation department in the fulfilment of the following duties/responsibilities:

  • Support the planning, coordination and implementation of the various technical work packages assigned to the Port Hope Construction and Remediation Project, including tasks associated with the Long Term Waste Management Facility and potentially other major remediation sites;
  • Support the review of technical studies and detailed reports prepared for the engineering team to ensure high quality (technical accuracy and appropriateness);
  • Provide assistance on technical matters and project deliverables, as well as ensuring that the deliverables are completed as expected;
  • Assist with field oversight, collection, tracking and filing of project data; and
  • Coordinate receipt and upload of electronic documents, drawings etc. into CNL databases; ATOM and Prolog.

REQUIREMENTS
Experience/Study in the field of environmental remediation and municipal infrastructure would be a definite asset.

Note: This is a four (4) to eight (8) month student work assignment that will run from beginning of January to end or April (4 months ) or August (8 months). It is a hybrid work assignment with both remote and onsite work required.
