Position Summary

The Lazaridis School of Business & Economics develops leaders with skills in management and economics for a rapidly changing and complex global environment. It seeks to advance knowledge and practices in these fields by supporting both theoretical and applied research. Further, the Lazaridis School strives to serve business and its community by fostering mutually beneficial alliances with leaders at local, national, and international levels.

The Lazaridis Institute for the Management of Technology Enterprises empowers emerging technology firms to scale rapidly into globally competitive enterprises. Through our Scale-Up Program, we provide the very best growth-stage Canadian tech companies the opportunity to work with world-class business leaders, and to build the networks that enable them to find the talent, the market contacts and the risk capital needed to grow. The Institute is co-creating a database designed to support innovators, founders, investors and researchers; and is also committed to capturing knowledge and best practices from its work with the tech ecosystem and with scholars to translate that knowledge into executive education curriculum. Our research arm is connecting scholars globally, to design, collaborate on, promote and disseminate research on innovation, technology and growth.

The incumbent is responsible for coordinating the funding and finances of the Institute to support the mission of the Lazaridis Institute. This includes:

  • Developing, implementing, and reporting on a fund raising strategy;
  • Coordinating fund raising efforts through the application, compliance, and reporting to funding sources; and,
  • Coordinating, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting on finances.

The incumbent reports to the Associate Director, Lazaridis Institute.

Accountabilities

Strategy Development

  • Develop, maintain, review, and revise a fund raising strategy for the Lazaridis Institute.
  • Develop, review, and revise metrics to assess the effectiveness of the strategy and maintain a database to store these metrics for longitudinal reporting.
  • Develop an action plan to execute the strategy successfully.
  • Write summary and longitudinal reports on the success of the strategy using appropriate multimedia elements and statistics.

Fund Raising

  • Successfully execute the strategy through relationship building and the completion of funding applications.
  • Collaborate with the Dean’s Office, the Corporate Engagement Officer, and Development & Alumni Relations on searching for potential sources of funds.
  • Outreach to potential sources of funds to develop and maintain positive relationships on behalf of the Lazaridis Institute in support of the strategy.
  • Apply to funding sources and coordinate the collection of information required for the application.
  • Monitor timelines and conditions of funding agreements to ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure compliance with funding agreements
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure that the proper metrics are collected for funding reports.
  • Monitor and track the use of funds to ensure compliance and forecast potential shortages or problems.
  • Write and submit updates and reports for funding sources.
  • Anticipate and problem-solve any concerns that may negatively affect relations with a funding source.

Finances

  • Develop the budget for the Lazaridis Institute with senior leadership.
  • Monitor the budget and provide forecasting updates and reports.
  • Complete scenario analysis to predict the outcome of financial decisions.
  • Engage in ongoing cost reduction analyses in all areas of the Lazaridis Institute.
  • Collaborate with other Lazaridis Institute staff on finances, when necessary, to process expenses and payments correctly in a timely fashion.
  • Audit PCard statements and other expenses.
  • Assist external auditors as required.
  • Ensure compliance with fund agreements, Laurier financial and procurement policies, and broader public sector regulations.
  • Collaborate with Laurier’s Finance Department to create and implement processes and procedures to ensure the successful operation of the Lazaridis Institute.
  • Develop and maintain a partnership with the Lazaridis School’s Financial Officer, establishing and allowing for collaboration regarding financial matters, as required; delivering full transparency and accountability of the Lazaridis Institute financial management.

Supervision

  • Work with the Co-op office and the Associate Director to hire co-op students.
  • Direct the work of co-op students and supervise their day-to-day work and projects.
  • Coach and manage performance of co-op students to ensure a successful work-term experience.
  • Complete required follow-up co-op paperwork.
  • Provide job references upon request.

Collegiality and Professionalism

  • Assist colleagues within the Lazaridis Institute and the Lazaridis School during high-pressure times to complete tasks on time; including, support with events and reports.
  • Maintain confidentiality around programs, reports, and budgets.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
  • Stay current on the most recent and relevant legislation, policies, best practices, literature, and software, related to the accountabilities and qualifications of the position.
  • Keep the manager up-to-date on important items related to the position through electronic or in-person communication and seek advice when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or equivalent
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience
  • Relevant experience with fund raising and donor relations
  • Relevant experience developing fund raising plans and aligning them to strategic and operational plans
  • Experience determining metrics to assess outcomes
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, intercultural, intergenerational, and persuasive communications
  • Ability to create and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Successful experience applying for and receiving funding
  • Ability to organize large amounts of information and timelines to meet deadlines
  • Experience ensuring compliance with policies and agreements
  • Relevant experience with creating, monitoring, and forecasting budgets
  • Knowledge of accounting principles
  • Proven ability for accuracy and exceptional attention to detail is essential
  • Demonstrated experience developing and writing informative and concise reports using multimedia elements, statistics, and financial data
  • Experience creating accessible (AODA compliant) and dynamic documents using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Collegial personality and experience working within and supervising in a team environment
  • Self-motivated and experience working independently with little supervision
  • Love for life-long learning, an understanding of best practices within the field, and experience with independent learning of new skills, theories, and technology
  • Demonstrated problem solving experience and working under pressure with tight timelines
  • Experience working within either the entrepreneurship eco-system or a technology firm is preferred
  • Experience working within a post-secondary environment is preferred
  • Knowledge of broader-sector financial and procurement policies is preferred
  • An understanding of the Laurier Expense Handbook is preferred
  • Experience submitting invoices to shoplaurier is preferred
  • Experience with Millennium finance module is preferred
  • An understanding of the responsibilities under AODA legislation is preferred

Hours of Work

This is a full-time, limited term position with an anticipated end date of September 1, 2023. The normal hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required, including evening and/or weekends to meet deadlines. When possible, the manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.

Rate of Pay: $32.65 – $38.41 per hour
