Sobeys is full of exciting opportunities and we are always looking for bright new talent to join our team! We currently have a full-time opportunity for a Director Finance – External Reporting and Consolidation to join our Finance department based out of our office in Stellarton, NS.

The Director Finance – External Reporting and Consolidation is a key leadership role within the company with responsibility for the consolidation and preparation of Financial Statements of Empire and Sobeys and the preparation of the Management’s Discussion and Analysis. You will work in a highly collaborative environment, developing relationships and partnering with finance Directors across the company to lead the execution of external reporting in a fast-paced environment.

The ideal candidate has strong analytical and technical accounting skills, is well versed in reporting requirements, and has a passion for process improvement, striving to find new ways to improve quality and efficiency of financial processes and reporting. You will have strong communication skills and believe in driving a team culture of high performance, challenging the team to be their best, think progressively, and continually learn and develop, while working together to deliver our collective results.

Job Description

What you will get to do in this fast-paced role:

  • Lead the execution of critical external reporting of the Financial Statements, Management’s Discussion and Analysis, and other annual filing documents for Empire and Sobeys.
  • Collaborate with our Investor Relations team and other key stakeholders to ensure accuracy and quality of all disclosures.
  • Assess impact of changes in the business, including the impact of emerging ESG matters, on financial reporting, accounting and disclosure, and ensure accurate accounting treatment and disclosure in accordance with accounting standards, policies, and IFRS.
  • Provide financial reporting recommendations based on emerging and developing OSC, CICA, AcSB and IASB guidance and policies.
  • Prepare and deliver monthly consolidated reporting of Sobeys and Empire and prepare high-level financial analysis of consolidated results for Executive each period.
  • Lead the completion of legal entity financial reporting (prepared for statutory purposes) and oversee pension financial statement preparation.
  • Support other critical deliverables for the CFO, Audit Committee, and Disclosure Committee, and involvement in other important initiatives as required.
  • Own the processes and promote a mindset of continuous improvement and challenge the status quo while fostering strong partnerships, ensuring accuracy and quality of disclosures.
  • Lead discussions with external auditors, ensuring quarterly reviews and the annual audit is completed for Sobeys, Empire, and other compliance financial statements.
  • Develop relationships and encourage all teammates to speak freely to drive healthy debate.
  • Coach, develop, lead, and delegate to a large team. Set and hold high standards of quality, timeliness, and professionalism.

Job Requirements

What your resume will include and demonstrate to us:

  • Professional designation (CPA)
  • Ten years accounting/ finance experience (5+ years in management) in progressively responsible positions
  • Strong financial and analytical skills
  • Ability to build and foster relationships with senior leaders of an organization
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced and changing environment, consistently meeting deadlines with accurate results
  • Concise and effective communicator with a high attention to detail
  • Finance experience in the retail sector and knowledge in Financial systems (SAP, Excel) preferred
  • Manage up mindset. Own processes, hold others to account, and drive timely completion of work
  • Inspire, lead, delegate and develop a large team
