Reporting to the Senior Engineer, Asset Information and Tools, this role is a key position within the Asset Information and Tools team as ATCO continues to improve asset information systems, processes, and supporting tools within our Electricity business.

The Engineer will be responsible for developing strategies for long term data stewardship, operating, and maintaining real time Historian and data interfaces, and developing in-house software applications. An important part of the role is to aid the organization in accessing and using data throughout operations and maintenance to support decision-making processes. This position is part of a very capable team of professionals all working towards developing and implementing this vision.

Responsibilities:

  • Continually innovate and mature data governance, data quality, data access, and decision-making tools and processes
  • Maintaining business documentation that outlines data management standards, processes, and procedures
  • Participate in and lead Asset Management innovations, improvements, and upgrade projects (e.g., Project Innovate – Substation 2025)
  • Support stakeholders and Asset Management team in driving forward advanced maintenance, asset performance management, and decision-making processes utilizing asset data. Continue to lead or support stakeholder teams through the process of realizing value
  • Configure and manage new and existing real-time data sources (e.g., MODBUS, DNP3, OPC, etc.)
  • Configure and administer Engineering tool environments (e.g., PI Historian, Insideview, Power Monitoring Expert)
  • In consultation with stakeholders, drive forward improved online monitoring solutions utilizing the Enterprise Historian, IoT, or other systems for improved asset management and operational situational awareness
  • Provide support for regulatory application processes (GTA & PBR), including developing business cases, responding to information requests, and providing support for omissions & updates filings including witness preparation
  • Coordinating with other engineers within the team to enhance and leverage ATCO’s computer maintenance management system (e.g., Maximo) for data alignment
  • Triaging and responding to end-user tickets and incidents for supported in-house tools and applications
  • Supporting development of in-house applications for distribution design (e.g., DMA) and project management tools (e.g., APS)
  • Troubleshooting virtual machines, network connectivity, auditing and reading logs file
  • Supporting existing and new cloud infrastructure (e.g., Microsoft Azure)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering with 3-7 years of utility or software development experience
  • Professional Engineer designation
  • Knowledge of asset information management and business planning, Transmission & Distribution (T&D) utility experience is an asset
  • Understanding of a regulated utility business environment
  • Good understanding of Historian tools (OSISoft/AVEVA PI) and timeseries databases
  • Competency in one or more programming languages (C#, Java, Python, SQL, etc.) and practices
  • Understanding of data communication protocols and specifications (MODBUS, DNP3, OPC, etc.)
  • Familiarity with computer networks and their operation is an asset
  • Familiarity with server management, virtualization, and MS Azure is an asset
  • Excellent report writing, communication and presentation skills
