Position Description

We are currently recruiting for a full-time Analyst/Associate to join the Investment Research (IR) group within the Active Equities (AE) department in Toronto. The IR group is responsible for a variety of functions including deploying empirical research and analytics to enhance decision-making across AE as well as deploying thematic and empirical research to help AE better understand relative alpha opportunity and exploitability.

Reporting to a Managing Director within IR, the Analyst/Associate will play a crucial role within the Research and Alpha Analytics (RAA) focus area by providing research-driven insights to the Head of AE, the Head of IR and AE Management on potential investment process improvements, relative areas of alpha opportunity and the ability to exploit that alpha.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the RAA team in conducting ongoing research to maximize alpha generation across the AE department, including but not limited to research on position sizing proficiency, stock picking skill, countering biases and returns due to fundamental drivers
  • Contribute to research that generates thematic and empirical insights into where the best relative alpha opportunities reside and the exploitability of that alpha
  • Produce systematic analytics that allow the results of the empirical research to be broadly shared across AE
  • Manage changes to the investment process including the implementation of changes stemming from findings of the empirical research that was conducted

Qualifications

If you possess the following, we’d like to hear from you:

  • Undergraduate degree in statistics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, economics, business or related fields
  • 1 – 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience working with large data sets (i.e. data sets that cannot be processed by a single machine), including data extraction, data manipulation, and data analysis
  • Demonstrated proficiency in programming using Python and SQL with familiarity of packages such as Pandas and Numpy
  • A solid understanding of financial statement data is considered an asset
  • Experience applying quantitative analysis on fundamental portfolios is considered an asset
  • Experience with risk models (e.g. Barra) is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of visualization techniques (e.g. Tableau or Power BI) is considered an asset
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and translate broad high-level questions into empirical tests
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as to perform effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Self-motivated, flexible and adaptable
  • Exhibit strong attention to detail and accuracy while meeting deadlines and working under pressure
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills both within a team as well as across different groups in an organization
