As an integral member of the Finance Projects Team, the Manager, Strategic Projects leads the strategic and corporate governance functions for the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. In this role, the Manager oversees the implementation of the multi-year strategic priorities of the Finance portfolio, including tracking progress against plan and regular reporting to Finance executive and the Finance & Audit Committee of the Board. The Manager is also accountable for corporate governance activities related to the Finance portfolio, both at an executive and Board level. This includes end-to-end management of planning and reporting for the Finance & Audit Committee of the Board.
The Manager serves as a key advisor to the Finance Director on all business matters relating to the assigned portfolio and is also expected to lead, participate in, or supervise other projects as required. The Manager is a highly motivated self-starter who proactively looks for opportunities for improvement and develops new structures and processes to achieve efficiencies. The Manager is a strategic, critical thinker with a strong business acumen who can tactfully and efficiently manage competing priorities and evolving stakeholder expectations. Please note that a Financial designation is not required for this role however; the ideal candidate should have an understanding of basic financial concepts and terminology. The Manager works closely with senior leadership across the organization to identify and manage projects that support the operational and strategic priorities of the Finance portfolio, in alignment with the corporate strategic plan and corporate initiatives.
Strategic Priorities:
- Oversees and support the development, implementation, and advancement of strategic priorities within the finance realm.
- Provides planning and project management support for Finance strategic projects from initial concept and design through implementation
- Develops and maintains project governance structures and reporting frameworks related to project approval, indicator development and evaluation, and ongoing monitoring and risk assessment
- In conjunction with the Finance Communications Advisor, develops and oversees comprehensive communication plans to engage and update project stakeholders
- Where appropriate, strikes up and manages project steering committees, including preparation of work plans, meeting materials, and meeting minutes
- Supports organizational decision making and ad hoc reporting by developing business cases, performing options analyses, and conducting environmental scans and research
- Acts as Finance’s liaison to the Corporate Planning team to ensure alignment with UHN’s corporate reporting processes and strategic plans
Support of the Finance Executive Committee and Board Committees:
- Oversees and manages all Finance-related reporting and updates to the Board and Committees of the Board, ensuring timely compliance with governance-related and cyclical reporting/approval obligations
- Oversees planning, scheduling, and documentation for the meetings of the Finance & Audit Committee of the Board and any sub-committees, as applicable
- Acts as Finance’s liaison with the Corporate Governance and Risk Management leads to ensure alignment with Board and risk management processes and requirements
- Supports management governance processes, including but not limited to management and coordination of strategic and executive management committees such as the Finance Executive Committee, Finance Management Team and others, including liaising with applicable internal stakeholders to plan for and prepare relevant materials/deliverables
- Actively monitors priorities and manages daily workflow and team assignments, while effectively responding to ad hoc information requests from internal/external stakeholders
- Takes accountability for document management and quality assurance of all materials/deliverables, ensuring accuracy of information, consistency in presentation/format, and alignment with the needs/responsibilities of the target audience
- Mentors and coaches individuals, as appropriate or required, on best practices in business writing and presentations, with the goal of setting standards and maintaining consistency across written materials and oral presentations
- In collaboration with the Communication Advisor, prepares CFO communications, presentations, and speaking notes, as required
Administrative and Human Resource Management:
- Performing budgeting/financial management responsibilities as assigned
- Manage and motivate staff ensuring high-level engagement
- Promote professional growth/skill development of staff to ensure on-going competence
Qualification and Experience:
- A university degree in business or related, required
- Minimum of five years’ experience leading projects from end-to-end.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification would be an asset
- Strong experience in content development and professional/business writing, required
- Minimum of five years’ experience implementing multi-year strategic plans, including internal/external stakeholder engagement, setting of metrics, and risk mitigation
- Demonstrated experience supporting a Board/Board Committee, including preparation and/or oversight of work plans, meeting materials, and meeting minutes; preferably in a healthcare setting
- Solid understanding of corporate governance requirements and best practices; preferably as relevant to public healthcare in Ontario
- High level of proficiency in written and oral communications, including documentation management with a focus on repeatable methodologies and accuracy
- Significant experience liaising with and supporting senior leadership, including preparation of executive-level briefing notes, presentations, reports, and business plans
- Advanced computer skills, including MS Excel and PowerPoint; knowledge of MS Project and MS SharePoint would be beneficial.

- Experience in a healthcare environment is beneficial
