Position Summary

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Manager of Clinical Informatics is responsible for planning, managing and directing the operations of the Clinical Informatics team including providing leadership for strategic planning, project completion, change management, operational support and training for the hospital’s clinical information systems.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan, manage and direct the operations of the Clinical Informatics team, in order to provide efficient and effective planning, support, and education related to Clinical Informatics and applications.
  • Support the Clinical Informatics team to manage and integrate data, information, technology, and knowledge in clinical practice to support health care providers in their decision-making roles.
  • Ensure ongoing engagement of users, senior management, and sponsors.
  • Provide leadership for project completion, change management coordination and training for Clinical Informatics and Applications.
  • Coordinate the execution of all major data, functional and technical decisions relative to clinical applications.
  • Develop policies and procedures, informatic standards, and change management strategies related to Clinical Informatics.
  • Manage vendor relationships, hardware/software upgrades and renewals, contracts and licenses, and negotiations for vendor deliverables in support of key program activities.
  • Work with executives, directors, and managers to solicit, identify and prioritize operational enhancements for improvements to the overall solution.
  • Leads/collaborates with professional practice in the development of an overall strategy for clinical improvements through process redesign and technology enhancements.
  • Coordinates resources and other support groups as needed to meet the operational service level agreements for clinical applications
  • Coordinates the development of system/upgrade rollout strategies including managing organizational change and ensuring that there is appropriate training and support for staff as part of project implementation.
  • Executes and assists in the Information Management Strategy
  • Effectively manage clinical and IT operations including budget, operational expense, and financial reporting.
  • Drive continuous improvement with respect to the team and program

Management of Direct Reports:

  • Hires, evaluates, manages performance and disciplines, as required
  • Mentors, coaches and supports toward optimal function
  • Supports and promotes opportunities for training, workshops, seminars or other

educational endeavors that would assist individuals/team to achieve goals

  • Conducts regular meetings to ensure all direct reports have opportunity to receive and

exchange information

  • Delegates, providing encouragement and supporting others to accept responsibility, be

accountable, evaluate actions and learn from mistakes

  • Conducts performance evaluations for all direct reports
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director, Information Technology – Clinical Informatics

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor degree in health or information technology related field required
  • Membership in professional association preferred
  • Education in Adult Training and Teaching Principles preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued professional education and self-directed learning opportunities preferred

Experience:

  • Clinical informatics experience with various clinical IT/IM & EMR applications required
  • Experience and proven track record in managing people required
  • Demonstrated experience related to clinical information system implementation or other health system transformation projects required
  • Experience with continuous quality improvement methods and clinical performance improvement is required

Demonstrated Competencies:

  • Highly developed clinical informatics knowledge base
  • Ability to work independently, be self-directed and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to facilitate effective working relationships with internal and external customers/stakeholders, including the ability to motivate engagement, negotiate, mediate and resolve conflict
  • Mentorship and coaching skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of health care legislation, professional standards, practice and safety regulations
  • Ability to critically appraise and incorporate evidence into practice
  • Strategic and project planning abilities, “out of the box” thinking and ability to take prudent risks
  • Ability to analyze complex data and assist teams with interpretation and application to quality improvement activities
  • Knowledge of quality and patient safety practices, including emergency preparedness, occurrence tracking and risk mitigation
  • Understanding of continuous quality improvement principles and practices including the ability to facilitate staff and team engagement, innovation and creativity
