As Legal Counsel working out of our North American Headquarters office located in Edmonton, AB, you will develop strategies and find solutions on issues involving the law, ethics and compliance, governance, risk, reputation, and any related matters that may impact PCL, including:
- Identification and mitigation of legal risks
- Engagement and deployment of legal resources
- Legal and ethical compliance
- Effective resolution of legal claims
- Contractual review, interpretation, and negotiation
- Review and interpretation of legislation
You will contribute to our team by:
- participating in the selection, monitoring, performance evaluation and relationship development with external counsel in Canada;
- assisting in the development and implementation of strategies to avoid major company problems;
- assisting Canadian district offices in the review, negotiation and drafting of contracts;
- participating in the development of standard form contracts, sub-contracts, purchase agreements and joint venture agreements;
- managing litigation by developing and implementing strategies and solutions to mitigate the risks of liability and the cost of legal proceedings;
- working with internal stakeholders, internal and external counsel, and other service providers to deliver desired outcomes on legal matters;
- providing advice to Canadian district offices and North American Headquarters on a broad range of legal issues, including corporate, commercial, employment, human rights, privacy, banking, bonding, builders liens, insurance, real estate, intellectual property, safety and environment issues;
- developing and delivering internal training on legal issues.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- A law degree and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta
- 3-7 years of construction law experience gained from a leading law firm or related inhouse role
- Strong academic credentials
- Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities, be self-motivated, and problem solve effectively and diplomatically
- Ability to establish and maintain strong customer focused relationships with key stakeholders and decision makers
- Solid understanding of construction legislation (liens and prompt payment), dispute resolution processes and construction contracts (including standard form contracts, joint ventures and P3s) required
- Knowledge of document discovery software preferred
- Willingness and ability to travel across North America
