Department: Nuclear Safety Experiments
Number of Positions: 1
Duration: 4 months (beginning in May)
Discipline: University Graduate program in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering
Year of study: Graduate student
Location: Chalk River, ON
NOTE:
All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of their work term. Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term in order to graduate.
Students must submit a resume, cover letter and copy of an up-to-date transcript by the posting close date of February 2, 2022 @ 11:59pm to ensure consideration for student employment.
INTRO
The Nuclear Safety Experiments Branch (NSEB) of the Advanced Reactors Directorate performs R&D activities in support of the Government of Canada S&T priorities, regulatory body, CANDU Owners Group, and commercial research activities. This student position is based at the Chalk River Labs (CRL) campus.
The Research Student will contribute to the design of one or more experimental facilities, to be used in studying severe accident phenomena. These experiments may include facilities with the purpose of investigating the convection of a pool of molten core material during a severe accident, and/or the mechanical properties of solidified core molten core materials. The student will be required to carry out 2D/3D finite element simulations (including CAD modeling, mesh generation, and data analysis) involving heat transfer, and potentially mechanical stresses and electrical currents.
This is a very exciting opportunity for a young engineering or science student, and we look forward to working with the student hired as they grow their skills in our lab.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The student project will be a part of ongoing research within the Nuclear Safety Experiments Branch of the Advanced Reactors Directorate, and will involve the following duties/responsibilities:
- Generate finite element models, mesh and carry out heat transfer simulations using appropriate software.
- Post-process and analyse computational data (may require use of advanced data analysis tools, Matlab, etc.).
- Interpretation of computational data and documentation in an internal CNL report.
- Creatively solve challenges inherent to the design of the experimental apparatus.
- Participate in weekly meetings with the CNL team for project planning and monitoring progress.
- Complete all necessary training to access CNL sites and follow CNL’s safety procedures.
REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:
- Graduate student of Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering program.
- Strong understanding of heat transfer and mechanical design (must have completed relevant courses at the university).
- Experience with generating 2D/3D CAD models and mesh suitable for finite element simulations.
- Experience with use of post-processing and data analysis tools (plotting software, Matlab, etc.).
- Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team.
- Strong communication and technical writing skills.
