Year of study: Open to students who have completed their 2nd year or higher

NOTE:
All students applying for student positions at CNL must be returning to full-time studies upon completion of their work term. Exceptions will be made for students who require a work term in order to graduate.

INTRO
This opportunity is located at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratories site along the Ottawa River in a recreational mecca, just two hours west of our Nation’s capital, Ottawa, Ontario.
As a student of environmental science, this exciting opportunity will gain you valuable experience and skills in the field of environmental monitoring. The Environmental Monitoring Branch is a well-established team of professionals, technologists, laboratory analysts and utility workers who provide technical services, information, and evaluations that support the environmental monitoring of CNL sites. The team is actively involved in developing, maintaining, and facilitating environmental monitoring at CNL.
Duties include assisting branch staff with the collection of samples in the field, preparation of samples for analysis, data management, and interpretation of data. Duties also include care of a vegetable garden plot at the site for the purposes of sample generation. This position will require in-person work at the Chalk River Laboratories site, including field work, laboratory work, and desk work. This is a very exciting opportunity for a young scientist and we look forward to working with the student hired as they grow their skills in our branch.
DUTIES
- Assist with the collection of various environmental samples in the field
- Care for a vegetable garden plot at the site for the purposes of sample generation
- Assist with the preparation of samples for laboratory analysis
- Assist with data interpretation and management, ranging from verification of data to upload of data in the Laboratory Information Management System
QUALIFICATIONS
- Applicants should be currently be enrolled at a college of recognized standing in Environmental Sciences and knowledgeable in general environmental sciences.
- Applicants should have an interest in field and laboratory work, and an ability to work safely and effectively in both a field and laboratory environment.
- Applicants should exhibit effective communication skills, oral and written, and be ready to work in a very team-focused environment.
To be eligible for CNL summer student employment, you must be:
- Enrolled to return to a post-secondary institution (college or university) in the following semester
- Available to work from May until August 2023.
- Legally eligible to work in Canada in accordance with Canadian Immigration laws
- Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a security clearance and reliability check
