Use your communications and engagement skills to build a more prepared and resilient province

Emergency Management British Columbia (EMBC) is the province’s lead coordinating agency for all disaster management activities. As such, EMBC works directly with local governments, First Nations, provincial ministries, federal departments and volunteers in the areas of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.

To support EMBC’s mandate, the Engagement, Education and Digital Services unit oversees PreparedBC, British Columbia’s official disaster readiness education program with the mandate of building a more prepared and resilient province. The unit also contributes to EmergencyInfoBC, which is British Columbia’s official online hub for active provincial-scale emergencies, linking the public to vital response and recovery information.

The Public Education and Online Communications Officer is responsible for the development of education programs and resources that promote the understanding of hazards (e.g. earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires) and how to prepare for them. This includes direct engagement with local authorities, First Nations and other partners to ensure all content is effective, accessible and inclusive of diverse perspectives.

These potentially life-saving resources are primarily promoted via the web and social media (Twitter and Facebook) using creative campaigns built and executed by the Engagement, Education and Digital Services team. Officers also support in-person preparedness events and oversee engagement activities aimed at building an “all of society” approach to managing emergencies in British Columbia.

The Public Education and Online Communications Officer may be required to communicate breaking disaster information to the public via EmergencyInfoBC (web and Twitter). Provision of situational awareness and public information during emergencies plays a key role in EMBC’s ability to provide coordinated response and recovery efforts.

The BC Public Service is committed to creating a diverse workplace to represent the population we serve and to better meet the needs of our citizens. Consider joining our team and being part of an innovative, inclusive and rewarding workplace.
