Job Description

Our Global Investment Banking group supports corporate, government and institutional clients with strategic advice, equity and debt fundraising, and corporate finance advisory services such as mergers and acquisitions. Our vision is to be the preferred capital markets banking partner to our clients, across multiple products and services.

The EIT team provides investment banking services to targeted clients in the upstream energy, energy services, infrastructure, renewable power, utility and midstream sectors. Our client-centric strategy incorporates M&A and other financial advisory services with full access to the capital markets (equity, debt and loan capital markets) as well as delivery of complex risk and hedging solutions. EIT manages a market leading platform from our offices in Calgary, Toronto, New York, Houston and London.

The role is based in Calgary and the primary sector focus is on upstream energy. The EIT team is committed to supporting CIBC’s clients as they navigate the energy transition from carbon-intensive fuels to sustainable solutions, and the impacts this transition will have on connected industries.

With guidance from Managing Directors, Executive Directors, or Directors, you will complete assignments that impact the firm’s bottom line through transaction and financing execution, client relationship support, industry and company research, and contributing to the overall communication flow across our global offices. The role provides you with top tier career development through an ability to observe and influence the strategic direction of our clients’ businesses and exposure to company executives and board of directors.

How You’ll Succeed

Associates on the EIT team will be expected to provide a broad range of analytical, research and presentation preparation support to all the professionals within the group. Typically, Associates are assigned to a variety of transactions and advisory projects, such as mergers & acquisitions, divestitures, equity and debt financings, and strategic advisory projects, and must have strong prioritization and multi-tasking capabilities. You will also be expected to maintain an awareness of our clients, industry, regulatory issues and relevant economic/political trends.

Applying your strengths in quantitative analysis to create and direct complex financial analysis and models while extracting the “big picture” implications of such analysis will be critical to your success. Associates will also demonstrate excellent interpersonal, presentation and oral and written communication skills as well as well-developed organizational skills in order to respond to shifting priorities on several simultaneous projects.

The role of an Associate is challenging and fast-paced. It requires dedication, passion for the industry and a very solid work ethic. You must be able to accept flexibility in required personal time commitments to complete work assignments. A successful Associate will also be relied on heavily to train, coach and mentor the analysts on the team

What You’ll Be Doing

Assist in executing all facets of the group’s mandates

Conduct industry research and analysis to assist in the identification and/or analysis of investment banking business opportunities

Play a key role in the preparation of materials used in client coverage efforts, and the execution of new and existing client mandates:

Develop and audit sophisticated financial models including net asset value models

Oversee and lead comparable public company, precedent transaction, and other valuation analyses

Participate in cross functional teams and liaising with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in executing mandates or preparing materials for clients

Prepare industry and financial analysis to assist with the development of client recommendations

Assist in company due diligence investigations

Support senior investment banking colleagues and directing and training analyst teammates

Take advantage of in depth technical and industry knowledge, as well as the geopolitical environment to generate transaction ideas/opportunities that can be discussed with the relevant relationship manager and deal/coverage teams

Relationship Building – Grow your internal and external networks by participating in the following activities:

Coordinating client-focused and/or deal-focused “brainstorming” sessions with relevant team members and product specialists

Liaising with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in preparing materials for clients

Developing relationships and actively communicating with various appropriate contacts at our clients

Developing and maintaining an internal network with product groups, other business groups, etc.

Developing and maintaining an external network with the market (i.e. key stakeholders, prospects, etc.)

Supporting CIBC’s image through involvement in community activities

Actively managing and mentoring the Analysts that work with you and providing regular feedback to them

Education You’ve Completed. Finance, accounting, mathematics, computer science, engineering or economics undergraduate degree. Completion of a CA or CFA is preferred and an MBA or Masters in Finance is an asset.

Industry Experience. Up to 3 years of previous experience in one or more of investment banking, corporate finance, equity research and private equity. Experience must have included meaningful financial modeling and analysis. Working knowledge of the upstream energy sector is a requirement.

Financial Skills. Excellent analytical ability including demonstrated knowledge of valuation techniques and practices, including net asset value modelling is required.

Technical Skills (Programs, Methodologies, Systems). Strong quantitative technical skills as it relates to basic computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), industry technology (FactSet, Bloomberg) and other applicable software.

Collaborative and Professional. Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills in order to develop, manage and leverage relationships with clients, and internal and/or external business partners. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills sufficient to provide detailed explanation and interpretation of factual and conceptual information and ideas related to complex technical and conceptual issues. Unquestioned professionalism, ethics and reputation and proven ability to exercise strong independent judgment when making business decisions and/or representing CIBC Capital Markets.
