This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.

Responsibilities

Biomedical Engineering Technologists provide support for medical technology Biomedical Techs repair, maintain, and calibrate life support, and other medical devices including but not limited to:
Heart/lung consoles, external pacemakers, dialysis machines, ventilators, anaesthetic machines, defibrillators, patient monitoring networks, and other patient care equipment including diagnosis, surgical, laboratory, and therapeutic devices. Biomedical Techs also maintain computers and networks. Equipment is maintained to current manufacturer, and national performance and safety standards. Biomedical Techs assist in the training of physicians nurses, therapists and other technical staff. This involves existing and new equipment and software update Biomedical Techs are involved with special clinic projects to enhance research in patient care and therapy. A history of all repairs and calibrations in continuously recorded Biomedical Techs support and initialize the replacement or enhancement of medical equipment and systems. Biomedical techs install and configure the systems. Biomedical Engineer is a multi-disciplinary filed requiring expertise in sub-specialties:
a) Electronic technology
b) Dialysis
c) Mechanical technology
d) Respiratory/anesthesia technology.
Biomedical Techs receive advanced training from manufacturers and provide training to other Biomedical Engineering Techs. Travel throughout Cape Breton is required to perform repairs and maintenance on medical equipment. The Biomedical Techs report directly to the manager of Clinical Engineering. Repairs and technical support are provided during evenings and week-ends through an on call rotation.

Qualifications

  • Electronics Engineering Technology (accredit 2 years diploma) required, specialized training in Biomedical Engineering, Dialysis, Respiratory Therapy, Mechanical Technology, and Electrical Technology an asset.
  • C.E.T. Certification (or eligibility) through Provincial Technology Society is an asset and pre-requisite for CBET Certification.
  • C.B.E.T. (c) Certification is an asset and required for Certified Technologist rate.
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required. Travel to other sites or throughout the province is required.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Passport.
  • Courses in Anatomy and Physiology an asset.
  • Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) service training (1 to 2 weeks) an asset.
  • Courses in Networks and Information Technology (4 months) an asset.
  • Strong background in Physics (fluid dynamics an asset), Math, Chemistry Biology.
  • Good manual dexterity, knowledge of tools and test equipment.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred.

Hours of Work

Permanent Full-Time position, 75 hours bi-weekly.

Salary Information

$30.9509 – $36.4211 hourly
