Candidate Profile

The Building Science and Restoration Project Engineer or Technologist will lead project teams, from conceptual and preliminary stages of the project design through to its completion. The work can take the form of evaluation, assessment and restoration/retrofitting of existing building envelope systems, design review of envelope systems for new buildings and other activities. The successful candidate is a self-motivated, fast learner with demonstrable communication and leadership skills, and a desire to continually learn and grow and has a passion for Building Science and Restoration. A commitment to providing exceptional client service and developing technical expertise to deliver practical, creative solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage projects and clients from conceptual design to completion.
  • Establish and maintain successful client relationships and support ongoing business development initiatives.
  • Consult on new construction for building envelope
  • Formulate building envelope rehabilitation programs
  • Prepare financial studies/life cycle costing for buildings.
  • Site investigation and evaluation of existing buildings and structures.
  • Preparation of bidding documents/specifications and drawings.
  • Preparation of condition evaluation reports and written recommendations.
  • Tendering projects to suitable contractors.
  • Structural analysis of existing building components and design of new repair measures and upgrades
  • Liaise with industry professionals in preparing construction documents for new construction
  • Mentor and train junior staff
  • Market and solicit work from new clients

Professional Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university, with specialty in Building Science preferred OR
  • Diploma or Certificate from a recognized Technological Institute having 2 or 3 year programs in Architectural, Engineering or Construction Technology. Preference may be given for those candidates with completed courses in Building Science or in technology programs that are Building Science Specific
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGA OR
  • Registered as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), Certified Technician (C.Tech) or Professional Technologist (P.Tech) with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology of Alberta.

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of relevant industry experience
  • Supervision of 2 or 3 design engineers or technologists
  • Minimum 5 years of Building Enclosure experience, including both technical design and contract administration.

  • Excellent client relationship skills –relate to your clients with ease and build lasting relationships with your personable style
  • Self-motivated, fast learner with the desire to continually learn and grow
  • Exceptional organizational, time-management and project management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail sufficient to produce error-free, high quality output
  • Ability to conceptualize design with an understanding of constructability
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to build working relationships with industry stakeholders
  • Team player with the ability to work independently
  • Leadership skills
  • Accountability – take ownership of your work and can be relied upon to deliver on commitments made.
