Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager, Capital Works Delivery, the successful candidate will prepare conceptual, preliminary and detailed design drawing and documents relating to municipal road and storm sewerconstruction projects. Designs are produced in consultation and in conjunction with internal and external departments, agencies, and governing authorities and follow Municipal and Provincial regulations and engineering practices.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties will include assisting the Capital Project Managers in all aspects of construction drawing anddocument preparation including but not limited to:

  • Coordinate and assemble information and data for base drawing preparation, including property,topography, utility information;
  • Liaise with internal and external departments and agencies to coordinate dependent design aspects;
  • Provide appropriate specifi cations and standards associated with the design;
  • Provide quantity take-off s for construction bid documents;
  • Provide preliminary and / or detailed cost estimates for budgetary or feasibility consideration;
  • Provide direction to City surveyors and inspection staff as required;
  • Provide input to City standards, specifi cations and contract document revisions as required;
  • Prepare graphics, data and support relating to construction projects as required;
  • Assist in review of external proposals;
  • Co-ordinate/attend appropriate meetings;
  • Respond to requests for information from other departments, the public, outside agencies, etc.
  • Train new or inexperienced staff as required;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate from a Community College in the Civil Engineering Program, with C.E.T. designation and a minimum of three to five years practical experience in the municipal engineering environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Specialized Knowledge of Road Geometric Design and Storm Sewer Design
  • Specialized Knowledge of CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting) software
  • Specialized Knowledge of Geomatics and coordinate-based design
  • Comprehensive Knowledge of Specialized Road Design Software (OpenRoads, Torus, Autoturn)
  • Comprehensive Knowledge of Industry Design Standards
  • Comprehensive Knowledge of City Standards
  • Comprehensive Knowledge of applicable Legislative Acts, including H.T.A. (Highway Traffic Act), H.S.A.(Health and Safety Act), A.O.D.A. (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act)
  • Comprehensive Knowledge of Provincial and Regional Government jurisdictions, standards and practices including but not limited to Region of Peel, MOE (Ministry of the Environment) and MTO
  • Comprehensive Understanding of Construction Methods and Practices
  • Comprehensive Understanding of workings of aff ected parties including but not limited to Utilities, Traffiic Operations and Traffic Control, Transit, Governmental Jurisdictions such as Credit Valley / TorontoConservation Authority, Provincial Authorities such as MetroLinx, Planning and Building, Emergency Services such as Mississauga Fire
  • Continuing Education for software, industry and regulatory changes and product innovation
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with internal staff , external agencies, consultants and the public;
  • Excellent attention to detail, proven organizational and time management skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to share knowledge and work in a cooperative and team-oriented environment;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and sound file management skills is essential;
  • Must have the ability to travel within various City sites.
