At the Department of Public Works, we manage 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges across Nova Scotia. Our Fleet Services Operations Division plays a critical role in managing snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services throughout the province.

Primary Accountabilities
You will assist the Sr. Mechanical Engineer in a wide range of duties and have the opportunity to:
- Complete mechanical design for new snowplow components;
- Complete stress analysis of snowplow components;
- Complete CAD drawings using SolidWorks;
- Assist the Sr. Mechanical Engineer in supervising mechanical staff;
- Design tools to assist mechanics/welders in job function;
- Work with mechanics and welders to oversee fabrication of designs;
- Analyze component failure mechanisms to enhance designs; and
- Participate in and collaborate with various staff on special projects which will further enhance and develop your skills.
Qualifications and Experience
You are a Bachelor of Engineering student, enrolled in a Mechanical discipline and eligible to complete a co-op work term beginning in January 2022.
Travel throughout your assigned area is occasionally required; as such, you must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable motor vehicle. Please include a copy of you driver’s abstract with your application.
As the ideal candidate you demonstrate a keen interest in mechanical design, component fabrication and CAD design.
You must also be:
- Proficient in mathematics and drafting;
- Familiar with SolidWorks;
- Organized and able to prioritize your work; and
- An excellent verbal and written communicator.
The following are considered assets including:
- Familiarity with SolidWorks Simulation (FEA);
- Familiarity with mechanical design, machine component design, stress analysis, mechanics of materials and failure theory;
- Exposure to heavy equipment; and
- Experience working with various trades (mechanic, welder, etc).
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
Working Conditions
- Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
- Typically located in comfortable office environment.
- Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
- Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
- May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.
- May require occasional visits to work sites or provincial offices.

One (1) position is available, located in the Fall River Mechanical Branch.
This opportunity will start approximately January 17, 2022 with an end date of April 29, 2022 or August 26, 2022, depending on length of co-op term.
Pay Grade:
Salary Range: $16.50 – $26.90 Hourly
