Job description: Gannett Fleming Canada is looking for an experienced construction management professional for the role of Construction Manager/Construction Engineer to join our team in Toronto. The Construction Manager/Construction Engineer will assist in the management of transportation construction projects for our Clients in the GTHA.
The role will involve working on a complex construction project that involves coordinating and working with multidisciplinary teams, which include architects, electrical, mechanical, structural, and civil engineers, track, and system specialists. The Construction Engineer will be part of a team of professionals that will provide and analyse constructability and the means and methods of construction. You will provide input into construction staging drawings and construction schedules. You will be involved in the development of PSOS requirements in relation to construction elements and will aid the procurement stage and on to construction management of the project.

- Reviews and provides comments related to constructability and biddability for construction documents, for multi-disciplinary projects, including property and utilities.
- Review and produce Constructability Reports and Staging Drawings
- Provide input into PSOS documents for construction requirements.
- Leads, coordinates, schedules, assigns, and inspects the work activities of assigned staff, consultants, and contractors for assigned projects
- Manages, supervises, and coordinates assigned design and construction management contracts; budgets for assigned contracts; monitors cost and cash flow and administers contingency funds; monitors each contract for scope, schedule, and budget compliance.
- Oversees reviews of submittals, requests for information, and field clarifications; and verifies quality control to ensure compliance and accountability with the Contract Documents and all current and applicable local, provincial and federal codes, laws, rules and regulations, and Agency policies and procedures.
- Reviews the work sequences, interfaces, and time durations in schedules to identify potential conflicts, and to ensure that work is efficiently planned and executed. Provides suggestions on how to expedite work to meet schedule requirements and tracks schedule delays and reasons for delays.
- Ensures contract compliance to technical plans and specifications; and reviews documentation and files for accuracy and completeness, including daily reports and construction logs.
- Assists program consultants and contractors in the administration and implementation of projects related to contracts and program phases such as design, permitting, procurement, and construction.
- Assists in the development of the assigned program’s/project’s annual budget; participates in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; ensures that project expenditures and cost estimates are adequately documented and monitored to their completion; reviews and approves expenditures; and implements adjustments.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Professional Registration with PEO as a P. Eng
- PMP Qualification by the PMI is considered an asset.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years in construction engineering experience that includes field construction, contract administration, estimating, negotiations; project and design management.
- Experience in underground construction and construction methods.
- Proven experience of heavy civil construction projects and underground station construction
- Knowledge in all relevant areas of construction, and understanding of various design and construction methods
- Demonstrated experience with transit agency (e.g. TTC, Metrolinx) is preferred
- Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience on large scale transit projects or transportation infrastructure
- Skilled in the administration of construction and engineering services contracts, and third-party agreements.
- Knowledge of pertinent federal, Provincial, and local laws, codes, and regulations as they apply to transit operations.
- Proficient in MS Word / Excel / Outlook and project scheduling tools.
- Valid driver’s license required; this position requires use of personal vehicle in good working order.
- Experience in directing technical field staff including inspectors.
- Risk assessment and strategic planning experience
- Preparing and analyzing complex data and comprehensive reports.
