Overview

The Construction Manager is responsible for managing the business unit including overseeing the operations of the Construction Group, marketing/promotion of Lafarge Construction’s image and products, customer relations, sales, negotiation, leading and overseeing employees, safety, maintenance, purchasing, budget planning and control.

Responsibilities

Health and Safety:

Abide by, participate in, and enforce all safety and environmental policies. Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to safety policies in all work environment areas. Promotes a positive safety culture through demonstrated leadership. Ensures safe and healthy working conditions on sites under his/her responsibility. Ensure strict compliance with all health and safety and environmental rules and country regulations

Marketing & Customer Relations:

Set price guidelines for all tendered work, develop and approve tender bid prices and tender proposals to maximize Lafarge opportunities on projects, identify target customers requiring attention and direct sales staff accordingly, maintain customer contact as well as oversee the resolution of customer complaints and evaluate projects for opportunities to add value.

Planning:

Establish market share and price budget targets, prepare business capital investment proposals with estimated return on investment, analyze competitive forces and factors affecting the marketplace, develop operating budget and establish controls, determine raw material quantities to purchase and establish supply sources. Establish and manage an effective schedule for all field resources.

Human Resources:

Responsible for the selection, training, leadership, development, discipline, and termination of employees. Encourage safety awareness and support employee involvement in resolution of safety concerns. Empower employees to take action whenever appropriate. Fulfill Annual Performance Management program requirements for all employees and develop key personnel. Recommend staffs pay levels, employee development plans and promotions.

Market Management:

Coordinate price, backlogs, market share tracking, and pipeline & horizon volumes across Lafarge Saskatoon. Prepare monthly reporting for Lafarge Saskatoon.

Technical / Operations:

Maintain a high quality image and reputation in the marketplace. Ensure maximum productive operations at minimum cost. Communicate regularly with employees over continued improvements. Be innovative in using new technologies and new product development. Maximize use of all assets. Actively participate in customer complaint resolution. Perform environmental and safety audit reviews.

Financial:

Review financial statements to understand true business performance and utilize this information to generate actions to improve efficiency. Negotiate prices for large non-capital plant expenditures, including raw materials supply. Monitor invoicing and accounts receivables.

Employees: 5 to 8 supervisors, up to 80 hourly

Qualifications

Education:

  • Degree in Engineering, Diploma from a Technical Institute in Engineering, or 10 years related field experience
  • PMP designation preferred although not required.

Experience and Skill Set:

  • 10 years of related construction experience

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Excellent customer service skills – dedicated to meeting the expectations of internal and external customers
  • Must be flexible and balance shifting priorities to meet deadlines
  • Possess a general knowledge of construction and A&C products and a solid understanding of the market, competition and business opportunities
  • Excellent leadership skills – must be able to motivate others and provide complete, direct and actionable feedback
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Possess a commitment to and willingness to devote great effort and time in order to reach goals
  • Ability to foster and grow a strong safety culture
  • Ability to make decisions is a timely manner, sometimes with incomplete data and under tight deadlines and pressure

  • Proficient with Google suite and Microsoft applications, specifically Excel, Word and PowerPoint
