What is Manufacturing Technology?

Our Manufacturing Technology division is responsible for developing and enhancing work processes and systems to maintain ArcelorMittal Dofasco as a leader in the North American Steel Industry. As an employee in the Manufacturing Technology Department, you are actively engaged across 10 different steel processing and service business units in these various sections of engineering: Process Engineering, Asset Engineering and Product Quality.

As an Asset Engineering Coordinator, your fundamental role would be to track equipment losses and find creative and innovative ways to reduce those losses in partnership with the operations and maintenance teams. You will be an active participant in achieving ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s strategic objectives in the areas of Health and Safety, Environment, Energy, Production, Quality & Yield, and Cost.

Accountabilities:

The Asset Engineering Coordinator will work alongside a team of engineers, technologists, trades and manufacturing personnel to improve equipment reliability and capability. They will identify and manage asset reliability or risks that could adversely affect throughput, efficiency, and product quality. The candidate is involved in but not limited to the following:

  • Participate with operations and maintenance in the troubleshooting and resolution of process/equipment problems.
  • Evaluate equipment failures and consequences using formal Root Cause Analysis to develop appropriate corrective actions, controls and training to eliminate/mitigate potential failures.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to ensure product and process quality as issues arise.
  • Analyze asset performance and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Lead design changes to improve asset performance.
  • Communicate recommendations to leadership, production and maintenance.
  • Develop, plan and execute asset improvement projects.
  • Remain fluent and up to date on new developments in processes, product, equipment and technologies for the manufacturing and processing of Steel.

Education & Experience:

  • 4-year University Degree in Mechanical Engineering or 3-year Mechanical Engineering Technologist College Diploma is preferred.
  • Consideration will be given to candidates with a degree/diploma in other Engineering disciplines provided they have relatable work experience.
  • 1-5 years of work experience in a related role is required.
  • Experience in manufacturing or a steel-related industry is an asset.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • General manufacturing, maintenance and/or equipment knowledge and experience is desired.
  • Understanding of sheet steel manufacturing processes is desired.
  • Understanding of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) or World Class Continuous Improvement activities (Lean Manufacturing)
  • Working knowledge of formal Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
  • Knowledge in statistical analysis techniques and statistical software tools (Minitab, R, Excel)
  • Experience in managing continuous improvement initiatives
  • Understand equipment (mechanical and electrical) failure mechanisms and modes
  • Mechanical design skills and practical equipment knowledge.
  • Mechanical aptitude and a “hands-on” approach to problem solving
  • Knowledge of Equipment Reliability concepts and practices
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and resolve conflict
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Work Environment:

  • Plant and Office environment as required. Required to wear personal safety equipment while in the plant.
  • The manufacturing plant environment includes exposure to dust, chemicals, temperature changes, noise and large industrial equipment.
  • This position can be done remote part-time (2 days per week) depending on department and workload.

Hours of Work:

  • ArcelorMittal Dofasco is a 24/7 facility
  • Normal hours of work for this position is “days”, Monday to Friday, with extended hours as required to meet project deadlines or resulting from periods of peak workload.
  • Company travel varying from local to international may be required
