Position Purpose
Reporting to the the Chair, Department of Biology, the incumbent oversees the day-to-day administrative operations of an assigned teaching laboratory, including inventory maintenance and assisting with the administration of some laboratory personnel. Also contributes to the technical administration of the lab by conducting and developing some of the scientific activities/experimentation and ensuring the safe and proper use, care, calibration and maintenance of the equipment and other scientific resources. Provides student support during laboratory experiments and acts as a resource person outside of the lab during office hours. Provides sessional lecturing, develops didactic materials and contributes to the standardization of student evaluation. Through the regular monitoring and continued interactions with laboratory coordinators, faculty, technical staff, teaching assistants, and students, ensures the continuity and quality of the laboratory experience.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Laboratory and Operations Management: Manages the daily operations of a laboratory within a faculty department, including responsibility for permits, inventory, scheduling, and administration of staff. Plans and schedules laboratory exercises for each semester, while assessing equipment and material needs and monitoring the effects of enrollment upon resource needs, such as personnel, material and space.
  • Scientific Operations: Leads setup, testing, and calibration of equipment and materials. Selects and uses appropriate procedures, equipment and standards to produce required data and optimize results. Designs and develops new, or modifies existing, specialized and novel techniques, test procedures and standards under the general direction of senior staff and professors and analyzes and interprets results. Assists in diagnosing causes of system, equipment or material failures and identifies possible solutions to problems.
  • Student Lecturing: Acts as a sessional lecturer and organizes, prepares, and presents lecture material for a predetermined number of courses per year. Prepares, writes and maintains didactic materials, including manuals, assignments and examinations for the assigned laboratory. Establishes office hours to respond to student questions and concerns. Collaborates with professors to ensure congruency of lab exercises with lecture components.
  • Student Evaluation: Sets and oversees the correction of laboratory assignments, tests, and final lab exams. Lead and performs quality control procedures to ensure uniform correction of all laboratory evaluation events. Compiles and calculates final marks for all laboratory components and collaborates with professors to calculate the final overall marks for the courses.
  • Personnel Supervision: Assigns, supervises, instructs, and evaluates teaching assistants (TAs) in the laboratory to ensure uniformity and consistency in the presentation of material to students. Provides guidance and expert advice to TAs on technical issues, safety procedures and regulatory compliance matters within the laboratory. Monitors operations to ensure the team’s effectiveness and compliance. Anticipates issues and assists when needed.

What you will bring:

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology or Microbiology. Ph.D. preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in research and/or laboratory operations.
  • Teaching experience and expert knowledge of laboratory protocols/procedures in the specialized area of research supported by the department or faculty.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, modifying, and/or optimizing scientific laboratory experiments.
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory tools, equipment, instruments, materials, hazards and their safe usage.
  • Excellent technical skills, analytical ability, abstract reasoning, and judgment with a strong operational focus.
  • Ability to read and understand texts of considerable difficulty requiring understanding of concepts, procedures, or systems.
  • Experience in supervision and evaluation of personnel.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate scientific and technical concepts in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, problem-solving, time-management, and decision-making skills with the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, establish priorities, and work within a budget.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access), word processing, Windows and Internet.
  • Bilingualism – French and English (spoken and written).
