Job title: Data Analyst
Job description: Are you interested in advanced analytics and transforming disparate and unstructured data into sound data-driven insights? In this role, you will have the opportunity to apply graphical development expertise to design, build, translate, and communicate data insights into easily understandable visualizations useful for both subject matter experts and business users. By joining the Advanced Analytics team, you will build on principles to analyze and transform data into easily understandable visuals that will help inform how we do business and operate today and drive decisions for our future.
You will use your expertise to:
- Participate and assist in data preparation, exploratory data analysis, fitting, interpreting, and communicating insights to stakeholders
- Assist in the collection of business requirements, scope, plan and define success criteria for a specific use case under the direction of a Senior Data Scientist, Data Developer or Visualization Analyst
- Research business problems to create data models that help analyze the issue
- Perform data mapping activities to describe source data, target data and the high-level or detailed transformations that need to occur
- Perform rigorous quality assurance steps to deliver highly accurate and reliable data products
- Utilize statistical tools and techniques to interpret data sets to identify trends and patterns that could be valuable for diagnostic and predictive analytics efforts
- Educate clients on data visualization methods and techniques to enhance business decision-making capability
- Develop analytical products to deliver insights through data preparation, data analysis and visualization
- Design and develop interactive data visualizations for internal and external consumption using complex datasets from different sources
- Design and translate mock-ups and wireframe into intuitive, attractive (static and interactive) data visualizations that drive action
- Develop knowledge of data analytics and visualization trends
- Create and maintain documentation for support and future enhancements

Must-haves (minimum requirements):
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics, Information Management or related technical discipline and equivalent work experience
- One year of data or business analysis role and related technical experience
- Solid understanding the principles and general ideas of creating a data analytics solution
- Knowledge of data preparation techniques and approaches for structuring, cleaning, and exploring data
- Excellent mathematics skills and knowledge of statistical methods
- Strong critical thinking skills: ability to look at numbers, trends, and data and come to new conclusions based on the findings
- Strong innovative skills to generate new ideas
- An openness to working in agile environments with multiple stakeholders
- A professional attitude and service orientation; superb team player with exemplary verbal and written communication skills
- Alignment with our

Preference for:
- Good understanding of the popular data analysis tools and databases
- Knowledge of data preparation techniques and approaches for structuring, cleansing, and exploring data
- Experience with dashboard/reporting tools (PowerBI or Tableau)
- Awareness in one or more data visualization libraries, frameworks, and tools (e.g., seaborn, ggplot, plotly, matplotlib, D3.js, jQuery, Shiny etc.)
- Awareness in one or more programming/web development language (e.g., SQL, Python, R, C/C++, JavaScript, HTML,)
Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:
- You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
- Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
