Overview

Reporting to the VP, Global Human Resources, you will work with executives and senior leaders in our global functions to implement a strategic approach to critical areas of the business such as organizational design, change management, workforce planning, succession planning, learning and development, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and employee engagement plans. This role will also ensure that there is consistent application, implementation, and improvement of approved HR practices, processes, and strategies within the North American operations, while collaborating on the coordination of global initiatives including driving cultural change. The incumbent will provide leadership, guidance on complex and diverse matters, as well as coaching and mentoring a team of HR professionals.

Position Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with both the management team and the Global HR team to facilitate and drive organizational and culture change initiatives to meet organizational goals
  • Manage and lead the HR Business Partner team by providing them with counsel, coaching and guidance on all HR activities including employee relations, talent acquisition, talent and workforce management, and compensation and total rewards management
  • Leads training and development initiatives that will develop the knowledge, skills and attributes of the North American teams in BC, Alberta and Ontario
  • Creates and maintains a talent-driven recruitment and retention strategy that will attract the best employees and help them achieve their full potential
  • Works with the functional business groups on current and future workforce planning requirements through proactive, collaborative planning while advising and supporting management on performance, organizational, and leadership matters
  • Oversees the design and implementation of compensation programs including merit and equity programs that align with organizational values, that reward superior performance and are competitive in the marketplace
  • Leads discussion on organizational design, reporting relationships, organization structure, business process, values and culture to best support business goals within a global environment
  • Partner with various business leaders and teams on internal communication needs, building a plan that will educate and inspire our workforce, including intranet content, town halls, virtual lunch and learns, business updates and employee engagement activities
  • In tandem with the global HR team, support the rollout of a Global HRIS as well as implementation of other efficient, effective tools and technology to meet organizational needs and enhance employee experience.
  • Leadership of organizational development strategies including talent reviews, succession planning programs, performance management and engagement initiatives
  • Functions as an effective change agent supporting and managing at all levels of the organization
  • Oversees the development of regional HR policies/guidelines and is responsible for organizational responsiveness to and compliance with legislative requirements related to people resources, workplace related investigations and emergency response measures
  • Overall development and management of the Human Resources budget
  • Leads, coaches, motivates, and develops the North American HR team

Health & Safety responsibilities:

  • Promote Westport’s H&S culture by leading by example in relation to Environmental H&S policies and procedures and understand our obligations and responsibilities as it relates to applicable H&S Acts and Regulations
  • Enforce Westport’s H&S policies and procedures, encourage safe work practices, correct unsafe acts, or conditions, conduct formal and informal workplace inspections
  • Immediately respond to, investigate, and take action from reports of unsafe conditions and/or behaviors

Position Requirements

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration or related field
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in human resources operating as a business partner in a rapidly changing, high growth environment
  • CPHR professional designation required
  • Experience managing or leading a growing team of professionals; inspires excellence in service delivery and develops talent through positive coaching and mentoring approaches
  • Proven track-record in owning and driving significant HR programs and initiatives at a national or global level
  • Ability to balance and support strategic, operational, and tactical objectives across the global team
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity with the proven ability to foster open and transparent processes and build relationships with leadership that encourage input and feedback as a means of improving internal service delivery
  • Able to adapt to a fast-paced environment that requires a constant reset of priorities and a commitment to achieving operational deliverables
  • Expertise in recruiting for technical and highly specialized roles, HR data management/administration and workforce planning and guiding the team accordingly
  • Working knowledge of equity compensation plans and programs
  • Sound knowledge of relevant region-specific employment standards and legislation
  • Experience or exposure working within a publicly traded company and the operational requirements of supporting future growth in new geographic regions
  • Experience with a large, global, matrixed organization preferred
  • Experience working within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) industries preferred

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the human resource discipline, trends and best practices that will allow you to quickly build relationships and establish trust, respect, credibility, and confidence

  • Demonstrated ability to understand the business and frame HR issues and concerns in a business context
  • Excellent change management skills, i.e., comfortable with ambiguity and constant change, yet able to set priorities and execute on commitments
  • Demonstrated ability to provide enthusiastic, positive leadership in a fast-paced, ever-changing, team-oriented environment
  • Strong business acumen and application of critical-thinking skills to manage complex issues
  • Highly developed communication skills, adaptability, and flexibility in dealing with complex and multi-faceted projects
  • Excellent coordination, organizational and analytical skills
