Job Description:

For this position we seek a resident of the Greater Montreal area.

The Mobile Platform Engineering Director will be responsible for the strategy, talent planning, technical deliverables, release planning, operations and health for the Sun Life Mobile Platform. This role will initially start off as a role to support the Canadian mobile apps and will evolve to include providing mobile platform best practices and tools for the broader Sun Life organization globally. The Mobile Platform Engineering Director will report to the Assistant Vice-President, Mobile Platform and Software Engineering.

The role also encompasses leading an Innovation team focused on finding new and innovative ideas in the support of mobile applications on both the Android and iOS platforms, keeping ahead of new technology capabilities by both technology vendors.

The Mobile Platform Engineering Director will have a team of direct reports including Engineers, Business Systems Analysts and Scrum Masters who are passionate about mobile technology and are key experts in this field.

Within this role you will be supporting the recruiting, coaching and mentoring of staff to develop a high performing, highly motivated and engaged team of professionals that are assigned to the Mobile Platform.

As a key member of the Mobile leadership team, you will have the opportunity to influence and collaborate in the definition of key Mobile delivery processes, lead in creating and bringing to life innovative Mobile ideas and be a critical force in the successful delivery of business solutions onto the Mobile Platform.

As a leader on the Mobile team, the Mobile Platform Engineering Director will coordinate a team highly skilled and collaborative individuals across multiple locations, including People Leaders, Mobile Software Engineers/Developers, Scrum Masters and Business Systems Analysts. The Mobile Platform Engineering Director will be passionate about Agile, motivating change and making it happen, championing a culture of continuous improvement and valued delivery to our teams.

The Mobile Platform Engineering Director will support programs such as new hire on-boarding, talent development, retention and succession planning. As part of the Mobile leadership team, the ideal candidate will play a significant role in ensuring a positive work culture while growing and retaining talent in the Mobile organization. Critical to the success of this role, the Mobile Platform Engineering Director will be measured by stability and security of the Mobile Platform, talent retention, employee engagement, alignment with the Digital Solutions DevOps and DevSecOps programs, financials for the Mobile Platform and successful business feature releases.

The Mobile Platform Engineering Director will be a key force in the delivery of high-profile Mobile Platform development, research and innovation projects.

What you will do:

  • Establish the strategy (including the multi-year Mobile roadmap), create the objectives and key results, identify the staffing needs and develop the execution plan for the Mobile Platform.
  • Be the Product owner for Mobile Platform squads and the technical deliverables.
  • Accountability for the security of the Mobile Platform, driving the remediation of identified security risks.
  • Establish and evolve Mobile Platform practices to ensure compliance with audit, security and risk guidelines and policies.
  • Lead the Innovation program for our Mobile Platform.
  • Accountable for the planning and achieving the Mobile Platform financials and P&L.
  • Lead and/or support global alignment on Mobile practice initiatives.
  • Contributing and/or adopting global Mobile re-usable assets.
  • Work effectively with third party vendors to manage the software and services related to the Mobile Platform.
  • Engage Technical Delivery leaders and Mobile leadership to collaborate on the strategy and plans for the Mobile Platform.
  • Champion an agile mindset, being transparent and adaptive to create a high-performing team culture.
  • Promote and enforce the use of DevOps technical practices and tools.
  • Implement strong Release Management practices aligning to the Sun Life change management processes.
  • Coach and mentor staff to develop a highly motivated and engaged team of professionals.
  • Support the talent hiring and retention for the Mobile Platform.
  • Contribute to the performance plans and objectives that recognizes talent and provides honest, direct employee feedback in a timely manner.
  • Promote a learning environment to develop team member skills that align with industry developments and organization goals.
  • Build team agility by assessing and anticipating knowledge/skill gaps and driving knowledge transfer and/or skill development.

What you need to succeed:

  • A technical Mobile Platform background with a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a relevant field.
  • Exceptionally collaborative and convincing. Able to navigate organizational change and strategize a direction forward that aligns the Mobile Platform organization with the needs of global technology leaders
  • An effective communicator at all levels within the organization, in both structured and non-hierarchical, informal structures.
  • Sound financial and P&L management.
  • Have a mindset of a test and learn attitude, a bias for action and a passion to innovate.
  • Multi-tasker, has positive energy and attitude to work in a fast paced team environment.
  • Strong collaborator with cross-functional teams from technology, design, business and operations.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • A self-starter – able to contribute while influencing the technical direction.
  • Conflict and issue resolution and escalation experience.
  • Passion to challenge the status quo and drive out-of-the-box ideas.
  • Experience in talent management supporting recruitment and selection, performance management, performance development and coaching, reward and recognition.
  • Strong leadership skills – comfortable managing cross functional technical teams, staff and project issues in multiple locations.
  • Belief in a culture of interaction, transparency and trust in teams. Able to build a non-hierarchical culture of collaboration, transparency, safety and trust.
  • Good analytical skills with the ability to assess alternatives, risks and benefits while focusing on the attention to detail.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
