Director of Engineering
Job Overview
Job title: Director of Engineering
Job description: About the Role
We are looking to bring on an Engineering Director to oversee efforts in our Product Engineering tribe, composed of 3 full-stack squads (each having 1 Eng Manager, 5 Full-time Eng, and 2 Interns). Our product engineering tribe is responsible for building out our hotels, goods, fintech, and superapp products, focused on saving users money and providing access to rich rewards for everyone. The teams are full-stack, building out our frontends, business logic backends, databases / caching, and cross-vertical infrastructure (such as experimentation and user identity / authentication). In addition to engineers, the squads consist of product managers, agile delivery managers, QA engineers, and designers that roll up into the Product org. In addition to overseeing the 3 existing squads, the Engineer Director will play a key role in growing a 4th squad.
Diving into more detail, as our Product Engineering Director you will:
- Tactically oversee the technical execution of ambitious projects and designs across 3 (soon to be 4) full-stack squads
- Manage product engineering managers, providing coaching, helping resolve technical and non-technical challenges, and completing performance evaluation
- Oversee quarterly OKR planning in partnership with the product team, ensuring a healthy contribution of initiatives from engineers, rigorous prioritization, and OKR demand matches team capacity
- Ensure appropriate distribution of projects and infrastructure among squads and have well-defined collaboration interfaces between product eng squads and other eng teams
- Collaborate closely with product and business teams to move quickly on key initiatives that deliver business value
- Contribute to cross-eng architecture discussions and designs
- Work with the squads and agile delivery team to continually refine / improve agile practices and delivery
- Work closely with the VP of Engineering and Talent Team to oversee / drive engineering hiring within the product engineering tribe, and be a decision maker for hiring
- Demonstrate and instill our core company values of moving fast, thinking big, being data-driven, being an owner, same goal one team, and being open & transparent
- Ensure our engineering teams are finding the right balance between building quickly and building sustainably (sufficient product & code quality, minimal productivity debt, following best practices, etc.)
Our Tech
- We use a state of the art architecture powered by microservices written with Node / Python, React, and our proprietary chatbot engine
- We use Postgres for storage and Redis for caching
- We use Gitlab for version control and CI/CD, and our infrastructure is hosted on AWS, making use of Kubernetes, RDS, etc
- We invest heavily in monitoring and automated alerting using Datadog
- We log application-level information using a proprietary logging pipeline, and leverage data analysis using Snowflake
- We use Amplitude, Hotjar, and LogRocket for client-side metrics and experimentation
About You
- On the IC side, you have been at least a Senior Software Engineer or Technical lead for 3+ years
- On the people leadership side, you have formally managed a product development team for 5+ years, or have led a team of teams
- You have been involved in hiring / interview processes, have been a hiring manager, and have played a key role in growing a team
- You have the interest and technical capacity to oversee full-stack product development
- You have strong knowledge of modern web technologies / tools / microservices
- You have strong depth with at least one of backend / frontend web development, and at least intermediate depth in the other
- You have strong familiarity with cloud-based infra (ex. AWS / GCP) – not from a devops perspective necessarily, but working experience
- You are comfortable working with business and product stakeholders, and have experience with project prioritization / OKR planning
- You have been a technical lead or manager for shipping a product / major product feature in an agile organization
- You have solid engineering design fundamentals and development practices
- You have experience contributing cross-team (ex. working groups)
- You are highly motivated / passionate, interested in wearing multiple hats / continuous learning, and looking forward to working in a fast-paced startup environment with an emphasis on ultimately delivering business value
- You are a positive / enthusiastic person who enjoys solving problems, not just identifying them
- You are an empathetic leader who values team lead autonomy
- You are interested in a role with: 5% IC, 35% Tech leadership, 20% Collaboration / stakeholder management, 10% Hiring, 30% Team / people management
- You have strong technical and non-technical communication skills
