Job description: What is the Opportunity?

Join RBC Bank as our new Director of Underwriting. In this role, you will assist the Chief Risk Officer in actively promoting a strong culture of Credit Risk across RBC Bank to support the growth strategy. You will lead a team of underwriters who decision both secured and unsecured lending requests. To be successful, you should bring innovative/out of the box thinking to make recommendations and to solve problems. In this role, you will provide leadership and 2nd line support to the development of new business strategies and you will conduct ad-hoc analysis related to risk management, investor services, product, and operations. Additionally, you will develop and oversee governance related to OCC and IA issue resolution and delivery of required materials and you will support operational excellence with a strict focus on identifying and managing Credit Risk, while actively supporting and promoting Community Reinvestment Act activities in close coordination with the Bank’s Fair Lending Officer.

What Will You Do?

  • Responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and underwriting difficult, complex individual consumer mortgage, HELOC requests:
  • Make appropriate decisions on strength of mitigating factors
  • Appropriately balance risk and reward
  • Reviewing complex financial statements, credit reports, US and Canadian tax returns and calculating applicable ratios (i.e. Debt ratios, loan-to-value, debt service, etc.)
  • Verify accuracy and completeness of financial documentation received.
  • Analyze employment profile, cash flow, credit strength, asset profile, property characteristics, and all other information pertinent to the credit decision.
  • Select required conditions on each deal to be satisfied.
  • Responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and underwriting Consumer loans including: Credit Cards and Personal Lines of Credit.
  • Lead team of five underwriters responsible for decisioning new secured and unsecured loan requests
  • Actively support and promote Community Reinvestment Act activities in close coordination with the Bank’s Fair Lending Officer (Lending & Servicing Tests).
  • Identify and implement technology and/or process improvements to increase the scalability and efficiency of the underwriting process
  • Lead a culture of constant improvement

What do you need to succeed?

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, mathematics, statistics, finance, economics or other related fields
  • 12+ years progressive growth and experience in financial services; Retail Banking, product development, credit risk management, and secondary marketing experience is required; 10 or more years in a management role.
  • 10+ years of demonstrated ability in managing a highly skilled, professional team of underwriters. Ensures that employees understand RBC and RBC Bank Vision, as well as support and reinforce targeted behaviors that contribute to RBC goals.
  • 10+ years of experience in Risk Management. Ability to provide focus and clarity in establishing individual goals, driving performance management, supporting career development and rewarding strong performance for a group.
  • Must possess an analytical mindset, have strong problem solving skills and a financial acumen
  • Extensive experience in risk policy, bank operations, analytics and economic factors that may impact risk levels of the Bank and/or given strategies
  • Must have experience as a member of Senior level decision making committees (i.e.: enterprise risk, policy, or working group sub committees)
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written skills
  • Proven problem solving, negotiation and project management skills

Suggested Qualifications:

  • Masters of Business Administration or equivalent
  • 5+ years Mortgage Portfolio Risk Management experience at leadership level
  • Business or Commercial Banking Credit experience
