IBI Group’s Calgary office is searching for a talented Traffic Signals Design Engineer to join its growing team! Our Edmonton office is a close-knit, multicultural and dynamic group with a mix of many disciplines such as civil, electrical, and systems engineering and architecture.

Most of the things you’ll work on:
- Responsible for hands-on successful design, production, coordination and management of traffic signal design, and inspection projects.
- Develop traffic signal and traffic control devices designs in AutoCAD. Microstation experience would be an asset.
- Design Experience in functional roadway geometrics, pavement marking and signage, traffic signals operations including timing and phasing designs, traffic signals layout designs for both permanent and temporary applications, traffic signal system equipment, cone of vision and roadway infrastructure dimensional relationship, TAC accessibility criteria, utility clearances, single line diagrams, wiring schematics, photometric layouts, and grounding details.
- Preparing wire sizing, voltage drop and conduit capacity calculations.
- Production of design specifications as required.
- Knowledge of and continual research into latest technology for traffic signaling equipment and lighting fixtures and associated controls, prepare technical reports, tender documentation and field support (including commissioning and site inspections).
- The successful candidate should have previous intersection design experience specific to public and private sector projects/development, as well as strong knowledge of construction methodology for both temporary and permanent design.
- Communicate effectively with clients and internal team members (Engineers, Architects, Designers and Project Managers) in the design and specification development of traffic signal projects within an integrated multi-disciplinary project delivery team.
- Ensure accuracy, completeness and quality of technical information and project documentation in accordance with QA/QC programs.
- Ensure that engineering deliverables (e.g., drawings, specifications, analysis, budget estimates) comply with applicable regulations, standards, corporate procedures and sound engineering practices.
- Ensure that project deliverables are met in a timely manner to a high quality
- Report to Project Managers
- Direct and supervise AutoCAD technicians where needed
- Review drawings and perform quality control checks
Qualifications
You’ll need to have:
- University Degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering focused on transportation / traffic engineering or have an Engineering Technologist Diploma from an accredited Technical Institute.
- Must be registered with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) or be registered with ASET as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET).
- Certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) would be an asset.
- 7 or more years of proven hands-on experience in in the full life cycle of a traffic signals project. This shall include warrant analysis, traffic signals design and inspections, functional roadway design, temporary staging, traffic operations/analysis, site plan design and with good knowledge of related electrical power distribution and telecommunications.
- Working knowledge of Alberta and municipal transportation and traffic signals standards, Canadian Electrical Code, National Building Code, TAC and MUTCD.
- Proficiency with engineering software including AutoCAD, AutoTurn, Autolux, Synchro, and AGI32 lighting design software. Microstation proficiently an asset.
- Excellent knowledge and experience in MS Excel and MS Word.
- Experience performing site inspections, construction supervision and contract administration
- Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team delivering various projects in complexity and size/scope
- Energetic, diplomatic, flexible, problem-solving mindset
- Strong organizational and prioritizing skills with the ability to take initiative
- Ability to anticipate needs and meet expectations
- Strong interpersonal communications skills applicable both internally with project delivery staff as well as externally with project partners (clients, consultants, contractors and regulatory authorities)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Occasional travel is a requirement
