Engineering Science Technologist – Onsite
Job Overview
Job title: Engineering Science Technologist – Onsite
Job description: The Advanced Fuels & Reactor Physics branch develops technologies for fabrication of advanced nuclear fuels, measures fuel material properties, conducts post-irradiation examinations to study the fuel performance characteristics, and conducts reactor physics calculations and experiments in ZED-2 research reactor. On-going projects include assessment of advanced nuclear fuels, molten salts and structural materials to support the development and implementation of small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced reactor technologies.
The mission of the Fuel Materials Section is to support and deliver R&D fuel characterization projects and activities. The position is essential to maintain equipment and laboratories in working condition; ensure compliance activities are carried out; develop new material preparation and characterization methods and experimental set ups; deliver projects that require (active or inactive) sample preparation, characterization, possibly fuel repackaging; and develop strategies to carry out those activities.
The Fuel Materials Section activities include thermophysical properties measurements of nuclear fuel and other materials such as molten salts. These measurements are required to support the development of advanced fuel materials, evaluate performance, inform safety evaluations, and increase thermal properties knowledge. Tasks are multi-disciplinary, and include interfacing with staff from: advanced fuel manufacturing, hot-cells, physics, thermal hydraulics, safety, analytical chemistry, etc.
A wide range of instruments and equipment are used to fabricate and characterize nuclear fuel including, but not limited to, laser flash apparatus (LFA), high temperature furnaces with controlled atmospheres, both cold and thermal plasma systems, spectrometers, a suite of thermal analysis instruments (thermogravimetric analyzer, dilatometer, differential scanning calorimeter),as well as common metrology hand tools and analytical balances. The successful candidate will set up, commission, calibrate, run, maintain, and troubleshoot instruments and equipment within the Section to enable successful execution of ongoing and upcoming projects.
DUTIES
Functions and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Ensure that instruments and equipment are in working order and properly calibrated:
- Perform routine calibration checks on various equipment and instruments (high temperature furnaces with controlled atmospheres, plasma systems, spectrometers, etc.) to verify that they are functioning properly and measuring accurately/precisely.
- Perform routine maintenance on control systems and safety interlock checks for instruments and equipment. Troubleshoot equipment in the event of a breakdown.
- Maintain instruments and equipment under calibration control. This may involve sending equipment and instruments out for calibration with our internal calibration shop or performing calibration procedures in the lab.
- Support the mission of the Fuel Materials Section mission by setting up and running experimental apparatus:
- Set up, commission, run and monitor experiments using various equipment/instrumentation (temperature-controlled furnaces, mass flow controllers, vacuum/pressure transducers, data acquisition systems, etc.)
- Contribute to reports and scientific papers by compiling experimental data, preparing graphs and charts, performing basic calculations, and describing the work that was performed.
- Follow established procedures and help develop new procedures for the operation of equipment and instrumentation.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in the Engineering Physics, or Instrumentation and Control, or equivalent formal education.
- 2-3 years of pertinent technological experience is considered an asset.
- Setting up and commissioning experimental apparatus and instrumentation, and performing experiments.
- Installing, calibrating, and maintaining instruments including temperature controllers, thermocouples, vacuum gauges, pressure transducers, mass flow controllers, balances, etc.
- Ability to use and troubleshoot lasers, optical mounts, spectrometers, radiation detectors, fibre optics, integrated optics components, vacuum systems, spectrum analyzers, electronics and computers, etc.
- Experience working in radiological labs/environment or in the nuclear industry is an asset, but not necessary.
- Knowledge of nuclear fuel and processes for fabricating and characterizing nuclear fuel is an asset, but not necessary.
