Enterprise Database Administrator
Role Profile:
The database administrator will be responsible for the direction, future planning, design & continuous operation of the Enterprise database services (including Student Information System (SIS), Financial Information System (FIS) and the Human Resources Management System (HRMS)), associated middleware and third party applications, to ensure that required services levels & functional requirements are met.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Architecting and planning the design, build, configuration, maintenance, capacity planning & security of the Enterprise database services, middleware & third-party applications.
- Leading the implementation of application releases through the different environments.
- Integration of data with applications & services that are both internal & external to the College.
- Leading problem analysis & resolution regarding critical incidents & daily support operations such as unexpected outages, database contention, security modifications & back-up or disaster recovery procedures.
Key Responsibilities include:
Responsible for the architecture design, future planning, implementation &/or use of database & middleware applications to ensure that any changes to these environments provides optimum performance, reliability & security:
- Engage functional areas of the College, including management, to ensure that identified changes to existing and/or new functionality meet the business needs of the affected parties & that any & all risks are identified, understood by those parties and mitigated/reduced.
- Accountable for Oracle database architecture & security design, provisioning testing, training, development, QA, & production environments; including database & application software installation, quarterly release management, configuration, performance tuning & facilitation of end-to-end testing to ensure target service levels are met.
- The incumbent will be required to support & manage databases & middleware applications for systems such as Banner SIS, FIS and ODS, Workflow, Document Management, Cognos and HRMS within a physical, virtual & clustered environment spanning multiple databases & applications tiers.
Consult & advise with business analysts, clients and management in defining business requirements and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness of existing processes for database and middleware applications. Document and recommend best (effective & efficient) options to support business requirements, identify impacts, risks and mitigation strategies of systems, business & security changes:
- Provide key advice and recommendations on the establishment of accepted service levels with client departments / management & be accountable for system performance to meet those levels.
- Proactively analyze systems, logs, exception reports and make recommendations to improve database performance and operations; Lead cross functional / department teams on enterprise projects to improve the affected applications and related business processes. Provides direction and feedback to the project team in terms of project goals, deliverables, timelines and quality of work. Responsible for providing performance feedback to managers of the project team members.
- Research & assimilate industry standard guidelines & best practices for database & applications management, security & integration into the College policies.
- Provide innovative solutions and recommendations to college management to business opportunities though application of best practices, industry guidance, fiscal awareness and institutional policies and direction.
Responsible for incident management and problem resolution & input on resource planning:
- Incident management and problem resolution will include leading a cross functional team, resource allocation & coordination, requests receipt, monitoring of resolution progress, provision of status updates to groups as appropriate, determining root cause & ultimately validation of implemented solutions.
- Provide recommendations to the capacity planning of servers, storage & network environments in order to ensure that resource requirements are addressed in advance of actual requirements for implementation on a timely basis. These recommendations are always accepted.
- Upgrade technical skills to keep abreast of trends and changes.
- Provide feedback and recommendations to college management where inappropriate of misuse of the system by staff, faculty and/or student.
Review security & access control settings & configuration:
- Ensure that settings & configurations meet College, provincial & federal security & privacy policy requirements as well as client needs.
- Ensure that auditing and controls are in place to ensure that appropriate access has not been modified or changed beyond accepted policy and provide feedback to the appropriate management and/security personnel in incident and/or performance.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Four-year degree in Computer Science/ Management Science or equivalent.
- Oracle and MS SQL Certification
- RedHat Certification
Experience:
- 7 years’ experience in a relevant field where the incumbent has managed a large system which include clustering and load balance applications. Understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the IT environment, component and operations is a must.
Skills:
- Experience in Oracle, MS- SQL MySQL & their associated applications.
- The incumbent will be able to demonstrate leadership and strong listening skills as well as a strong ability to problem solve.
- Communication skills and change management skills are considered an asset.
