This position is responsible for supervising, tracking and evaluating day-to-day finance activities. The Finance Manager’s responsibilities include developing and implementing systems for collecting, analyzing, verifying and reporting information.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Accounting Responsibilities:
- Manage the daily activities of the accounting department
- Assist with the planning and execution of program and financial audits, including preparing information and responding to audit inquiries
- Support in the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to financial management, budget and accounting; assist with the review and monitoring of finance operations to ensure they meet compliance requirements
- Identify areas of improvement and provide recommendations for overall control framework and financial operations
- Oversee the posting and maintenance of general ledger accounts, payroll transactions, accounts payable and general ledger adjustments
- Prepare financial analysis statements including monthly balance sheets, income statements, cash flows statements, balance sheet reconciliations and variance analyses
- Responsible for the flow of accurate timely financial data in accounting systems
- Track allocation of funds to meet donors’ wishes and requirements
- In collaboration with colleagues and external resources, ensure that the function’s financial practices comply with ethical guidelines
Financial Planning and Analysis:
- Implement the organization’s fiscal function and performance
- Evaluate and assess the impact of long range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory action
- Provide financial input and reports to assist with decision making for issues affecting the organization
- Prepare timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends in order to assist the CFO and other senior executives in performing their responsibilities
- Work with other departments on preparing budgets and forecasts; track actual performance against budgets and analyze variances
Team Management:
- Supervise and review the work of the finance team, providing ongoing coaching and support to the team to complete tasks
- Manage workload and performance through regular one-on-ones and discussions
- Plan and implement personal development program for team members in all relevant skills
- Undertake annual performance reviews
- Facilitate the professional and personal growth of staff with emphasis on opportunities (where possible) of individuals
Qualifications/Competencies:
Experience:
- 2-3 years of experience with external reporting, external audits including documentation skills and audit files, or other related experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Commerce, Accounting, or other related field
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation an asset
- Experience in financial analysis, general ledger accounting, month-end close and auditing
- Experience in preparing detailed financial documents and complex reports
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledgeable about the Canada Revenue Agency’s compliance guidelines, rules and regulations affecting registered charities in Canada
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work with cross-functional teams and strong coaching and leadership skills
- Ability to organize financial information into meaningful content for end user
- Familiarity with fund accounting and regulations governing non-profit organizations
- Must possess excellent communication skills, be well-organized, and able to work well in a team environment
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
