Job Description:

Role Summary:

The GB Reinsurance Operations team is a sub set of the Finance group responsible for the administration and accounting of reinsurance arrangements within Group Benefits. The team maintains the day-to-day operations of GB reinsurance treaties through processing reinsurance settlements, performing analyses, reconciling reinsurance accounts, and providing customer service to reinsurers and other stakeholders.

Reporting to the Manager, GB Reinsurance Operations, the Senior Group Finance Analyst will be responsible for the administrative and technical support of a small group of reinsurance analysts and more complex Reinsurance arrangements. The incumbent will develop and maintain effective Reinsurance practices, process complex reinsurance settlements, develop and prepare reports for regulatory bodies and internal partners, and assist in the development and maintenance of accounting models.

Success in this role is measured based upon overall ability to effectively represent the interests and mandate of the organization, support the maintenance of financial and operational controls, training, and documentation. These must be accomplished while optimizing operational effort by resolving issues and deficiencies brought forth through multiple channels; including reinsurers, audit reports, and internal stakeholders.

What will you do:

Settlement Modeling and Accounting:

  • Work with stakeholders to properly interpret signed reinsurance treaties and amendments.
  • Determine administrative and accounting requirements of the new or amended arrangement and work with team members to implement the required processes.
  • Ensure strong controls are built and implemented to accommodate the arrangement.
  • Process complex settlements and related accounting
  • Review settlements prepared by staff.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
  • Coordinates and/or supports internal and external audits
  • Support the implementation of IFRS 17 needs as it relates to Reinsurance processes and financial reporting.

Practice Ownership:

  • Develop, document, and maintain team policies, practices and procedures, in partnership with the Manager, Reinsurance Operations.
  • Develop and deliver training to Reinsurance Operations team members and other stakeholders
  • Identify and implement process enhancements to increase team efficiency and improve customer experience of internal partners.
  • Review and approve settlements, in partnership with the Manager, Reinsurance Operations.

What do you need to succeed:

  • University degree in Accounting, Economics, Mathematics or related area of study with minimum two years work experience.
  • Accounting/Finance designation or working toward (CPA/CFA).
  • Advanced financial modeling and analytical skills, including expert knowledge of Excel.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance treaties and administration and/or knowledge of underwriting principles and policies.
  • Strong planning and organizational capabilities, including the ability to coordinate a large, diverse group of individuals in the completion of a common deliverable.
  • Track record in leading or supporting the improvement of processes and controls.
  • Knowledge and application of accounting principles and standards.
  • Excellent verbal communication, bilingualism preferred (English & French).
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely to different audiences (i.e., team members, IT representatives, reinsurers, internal partners, etc.).
  • Attention to detail.
  • Energetic and results-oriented.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of Sun Life Financial GL(Oracle,SAP and Hyperion) and accounting systems including CDB, CHESS, Oasis, Genesis and Datamart.
  • CEBS designation or working towards (GBA).
  • Knowledge of Group Benefits products and services.

  • Overtime may be required during peak demands at monthly and quarterly intervals.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
