Role Description and Terms of Reference

The Head of the Childhood Diabetes Research Laboratories will provide oversight, leadership, and strategic guidance for diabetes research at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR), and will play an integral role in the success of research within BC Children’s Hospital. A creative and visionary leader, the Head of the Childhood Diabetes Research Laboratories works with outstanding clinicians, scientists and members of the community to build diabetes research capacity at BCCHR, promote collaborative interactions within the Diabetes Research Program and with other BCCHR research programs, and foster the training and development of current and future diabetes researchers. The Head of the Childhood Diabetes will further interactions with partners (e.g. University of British Columbia (UBC), BC Children’s Hospital Foundation (BCCHF), the Canucks for Kids Fund (CFKF), and other research units within the Provincial Health Services Authority), and is expected to nurture strategic relationships with other provincial, national, and international organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serves as the strategic leader of diabetes research across BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH).
  • Champions pediatric diabetes research at BCCHR, a part of the BCCH:
  • Represents the research program within the local community and national networks and communities, as opportunities arise and circumstances permit. At present, there are 12 research groups including 9 wet laboratories conducting diabetes research at BCCHR, and even more supporting diabetes research and clinical activities across the BCCH and the Oak Street Campus.
  • Works with the BCCHR Senior Executive Director, the Childhood Diseases Theme Lead and other relevant leaders to incorporate strategic priorities for diabetes research, to engage the Research Institute at all levels in diabetes research, and to build and nurture diabetes research at BCCHR.
  • Engages with BCCHF and key funders of diabetes research (e.g. CFKF).
  • Responsible for oversight of specifically assigned funding in support of Diabetes Research Programs at BCCHR (such as funds provided by CFKF).
  • Leads the Diabetes Research Laboratories:
  • Develops strategic research plans.
  • Prepares annual budgets (subject to final approval by the BCCHR Senior Executive Director).
  • Approves budget expenditures.
  • Identifies and recommends areas for recruitment in diabetes research and develops plans and seeks partnerships to support each recruitment.
  • Fosters relationships and partners with clinicians both at BCCHR and those not affiliated with the Research Institute.
  • Manages the Diabetes Research Program staff not directly managed by other diabetes research principal investigators.
  • Works with the BCCHF to fundraise for BCCHR diabetes research, including preparing donation requests, donor stewardship, donor events (e.g. lab tours), preparing annual reports, and presentations (e.g. for the CFKF board).
  • Advises on space and resource utilization in consultation with the Director, BCCHR Facilities.
  • Builds and nurtures a collegial and interactive work environment and sense of community.
  • Supports the development and implementation of diabetes research projects and activities, both when directly involved (e.g. as principal or co-investigator) or when the projects contribute to the overall success of such research at BCCHR (e.g. serving as advisor, facilitator and/or mentor in the development of collaborative interactions).
  • Provides oversight of the philanthropic funds that flow through the Diabetes Research Laboratories.
  • Meets the highest standard of integrity and ethics, follows the best research practices, and maintains and enhances the reputation of BCCHR.
  • Partners with the Head, BCCH Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, to encourage translational diabetes research and to oversee and participate in clinical research activities including activities of the Clinical Trials Unit.
  • Represents diabetes research within BCCHR by serving on appropriate leadership structures.
  • Leads their own cutting-edge diabetes research program at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute.
  • Provides mentorship for other investigators in diabetes research, and supports other areas of the BCCHR mentorship program.
  • Builds and supports diabetes research training at BCCHR.

Support

The Head of the Diabetes Research Laboratories is supported by BCCHR administration services, such as assistance with financial planning, research development, facilities, Core facilities, and informatics/IT.

Commitment

The Head of the Diabetes Research Laboratories will be based at BCCHR and commit 15-20% of time in serving as a leader and promoting diabetes research activities. In support of these leadership and administrative duties, a modest annual stipend is provided.

Term of Appointment and Reporting Structure

5-year renewable term up to 10-year maximum. Reports to the BCCHR Senior Executive Director.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a UBC or Simon Fraser University (SFU) tenured faculty member at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor (Academic or Clinical) and will possess an MD and/or PhD or equivalent, with an established record of excellence in childhood diabetes research, mentorship, as well as evidence of development of leadership and management experience. Priority will be given to Investigators at BCCHR with an active laboratory onsite (Oak street campus), however, applications are welcome from candidates currently located on the UBC or SFU Campus who are willing to move to the Oak Street campus.

The incumbent must have excellent communication skills, administrative experience, and organizational skills and have demonstrated collaborative leadership attributes and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
