The Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Infrastructure Technical Specialist for approximately 1 year.

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the incumbent is the Space Specialist for the Faculty of Science and is responsible for all physical and technical infrastructure within the Faculty of Science. Responsibilities include strategic planning, budget management within projects, management of all physical infrastructure and facilities that support the teaching, research and administrative functions of the Faculty. The infrastructure spans 8 buildings, occupying roughly 200,000 m2, and includes buildings, laboratories, classrooms and offices, as well as field stations and greenhouses, serving the needs of the Faculty’s academic and administrative activities. As the primary point of contact for the Faculty on all matters of infrastructure, space and projects, this role requires flexibly in working hours, as dictated by its responsibilities and necessity to achieve outcomes, particularly for time sensitive projects or during periods of high demand.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Implement all of the space and physical infrastructure plans of the Faculty of Science by developing and administering policies and processes relating to their allocation, utilization, development and renovation
- Facilitate and execute the effective use of space and resources within the Faculty of Science (as approved by the Director of Operations and in alignment with Campus standards
- Based on University and Faculty priorities, identify needs for additional space, major renovation requirements and potential capital projects
- Assist in devising short and long term plans for physical development of the Faculty; regularly provide updated information, to the Director of Operations, for Campus Planning
- Develop proposals and functional designs for significant renovations, upgrades and new buildings (i.e. Capital Projects), to ensure that they support the long-term physical planning goals of the Faculty, working with Campus Planning
- Working with Campus Planning and Science Departments, develop, maintain and implement the space database
- Develop and implement policies, strategies, procedures and processes across the Faculty.
- Serve as a critical resource to the Director of Operations and designated space contacts in each department of Science including assisting with compliance with all applicable government legislation and University policies
- Provide in-scope supervision to administration support in the Faculty of Science
- Communicate regularly, both formally and informally, with the Director of Operations, Faculty Administration Assistants, Administrative Services Zone manager, and with the Campus Planning regarding the space management and capital projects
- Provide formal, written reporting to the Director of Operations on all projects as required
- Build positive working relationships with Faculty of Science staff and faculty as well as University partners and stakeholders to be developed and maintained
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Qualifications in engineering, project management, or facilities design or equivalent experience
- At least 7 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in a complex organization, including experience with strategic business and budget planning, policy development, asset management and project management.
- Equivalent combinations of experience and education will be considered.
- Demonstrated success in working within strong teams, being a catalyst for change, developing and using metrics to improve organizational performance relative to portfolio, deploying resources to achieve effective and efficient outcomes, and establishing and maintaining strong and positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience and success in executing strategic vision for a complex organization, ideally in a service-based environment is an asset.
- Ability to respond to significant change and ever-changing priorities
- Ability to manage complex projects that require multiple stakeholders with potentially competing priorities
- Proficient in utilizing technology as a solution and increasing efficiencies
- Knowledge of infrastructure requirements supporting multidisciplinary modalities, and creating common space that meets various needs
- Ability to communicate and guide teams of other professionals including Campus architects, engineers, trades personnel, Facilities staff, OHS teams, as well as accountants and department Administration Assistants
- A strong understanding of and experience with building design, construction, engineering systems practices and operations
- Knowledge of safety compliance, financial management, and legal and regulatory compliance.
- A proven track record of effective project planning, management and development
- Accurate and effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- Ability to interact and work effectively with faculty, staff, students and members of the community at large and has strong negotiation and mediation skills
- Customer service orientation and the ability to establish working relationships based on respect and trust with clients, partners and staff
- Must be resilient and functional in a stressful environment
