Exciting opportunity to join the dynamic Portfolio Management Team (PMT) as an Associate. In this position you will play a meaningful role in helping manage Equities portfolio construction initiatives, leading portfolio monitoring across the ~70 direct investments, timely execution of cross-portfolio initiatives, and coordinating the mid-year and year-end valuation processes and preparing reports and analysis for the senior leadership teams including the CIO and Board.

This is a highly valued fast paced team supporting multiple partners in Private Capital Directs, Fund Investing, High Conviction Equities, TFM, Finance and Risk. Who you’ll work with

You will be joining a collaborative team of private equity investors and portfolio managers with an established track record of top-quartile performance in a $43bn Equities portfolio (as of June 30, 2020). On this team you will report directly to the Senior Principal, PMT and you will also develop and mentor junior colleagues on a variety of projects.

You will collaborate regularly with diverse investment professionals within the department and for specific initiatives you may help lead internal teams and/or external partners. You may also work alongside with our Value Creation & Analytics colleagues in the Infrastructure & Natural Resources team on initiatives that straddle all Private Investments. Support department-wide portfolio analytics, monitoring and operationally focused activities

Assist in developing & enhancing regular and ad hoc portfolio-wide analytics (exposures and performance by portfolio, industry, geography, deal team, vintage, ownership, financial performance, risk & benchmarks) to help inform portfolio construction and investing decisions

Manage the develop high quality, succinct internal reporting, including the Equities Annual Board Reports, Investment Committee reporting, Capital Planning, Liquidity Continuum and other ad-hoc reports to CIO, functional partners, OTPP ET & Board

Oversee timely and efficient portfolio monitoring of ~70 portfolio companies through iLevel portfolio management software process; assist with any troubleshooting activities regarding the same

Assist in Mid-Year & Year-End valuation process oversight for Equities, ensuring consistency in approach across Toronto, London, Hong Kong, and Singapore deal teams, providing concise commentary & projections and ensuring high quality valuation submissions to Finance

Collaborate with TFM, Risk, Performance, Financial Operations, and Valuation on Equities-specific & fund-wide initiatives (e.g. Modelling the Firm, Efficiency Metrics, etc.)

Support Risk in ensuring departmental risk is accurately measured, risk models are accurately developed and implemented in a timely manner

Preparation of presentations and/or materials for SMD Equities or other senior team members for off-sites, conference, team meetings, etc.

Assist with coordinating and preparing Equities annual administrative expense budget and department scorecard

Take ownership for analytical dashboards and reporting using PowerBI

Contribute to cross-portfolio initiatives and sharing of best practices

Provide input into ad-hoc asset and benchmark hedging strategies

Support junior colleague training and development

Over the next two years in this role, the Associate, PMT, will have delivered on the following:

Become a trusted thought partner to PMT Senior Principal, the PMT, and deal teams on reporting, valuation, and monitoring initiatives and developed a strong relationship with Finance, TFM and Risk

Created and maintained new analytical insights using PowerBI

Provided high quality timely reporting to relevant partners

Further develop PMT team juniors for successful roles elsewhere in the Fund, where applicable

Engage deal teams in cross portfolio initiatives improving efficiency, managing risk and providing consistency across portfolio What you’ll need

Our ideal candidate will have +3 years of progressive experience in finance and valuation including the following:

Undergraduate degree in accounting, business management or related field

Preference CBV designation or similar professional qualification (CPA, CFA)

Working knowledge of equity valuations with various methodologies across multiple industries, performance management & reporting

Strong project management skills, ability to develop concise analysis, identify relevant insights & tell the story

Ability to balance competing priorities, work independently, and thrive in a high-performance team environment

Strong Excel, PowerPoint & writing skills; experience with PowerBI

Keen attention to detail and production of zero-defect work
