Job title: Lab Technologist Labs Molecular

Job description: The Department of Laboratory Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital provides comprehensive testing for patients across all disciplines of lab medicine. . Currently, a number of methodologies are being performed including, end-point PCR, real-time PCR, Fluorescent in-Situ Hybridization (FISH), Chromogen In-Situ Hybridization (CISH). The Molecular Technologist is responsible for performing all aspects of testing in a Clinical Molecular Laboratory; evaluation and introduction of new material, methods, and equipment to help determine the feasibility and/or adaptability for clinical molecular studies. The Molecular Technologist assists supervisors in the development of new technologies and participates in documenting and implementing Quality Assurance (QA)/ Quality Control (QC)/Quality Inventory (QI) procedures.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs patient testing in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures
  • Participates in test development and validation
  • Performs analytical tests, assesses, interprets and reports results
  • Performs quality control testing, assesses, interprets and reports results
  • Participates in material management, inventory management, safety management and quality assurance
  • Rotates through different work areas as required; able to work all shifts, as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional registration as a Medical Laboratory Technologist with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) is required
  • Recent experience in a Molecular Laboratory is required
  • Demonstrated sound knowledge of Molecular procedures
  • Demonstrate troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience in running and reporting results from the Genetic Analyzer, Extractor, ABI 7500 Real Time PCR
  • Solid computer skills and experience in automation methods
  • Excellent team-building, conflict management and customer service skills
  • Excellent attendance record and punctuality

HOURS:

  • Predominantly Monday to Friday days; however, may be required to work holidays, weekends and off shifts to support patient care.
