Manager of Mechanical Engineering & Design (on-site)

Job Overview

Job title: Manager of Mechanical Engineering & Design (on-site)

Job description: We have an exciting leadership opportunity in a company that is making a genuine difference. Saltworks Technologies is a profitable and growing technology leader in Advanced Industrial Desalination and Lithium Refining. Our modular robust designed plants are installed globally, treating industrial water for products you use every day, while also helping to propel the electric vehicle revolution by ‘mining lithium from water.’

If you are a Professional Mechanical Engineer with leadership experience and seeking a new opportunity, we would like to hear from you. Please consider joining our Senior Management Team as the Manager of Mechanical Engineering & Design. The Mechanical Engineering team was built by our VP of Engineering to whom this position will report to, while our CEO and Founder is also a Mechanical Engineer – we deeply value this position and team and the critical role they play.

Prior water and lithium experience is not required as the focus is on sound mechanical design, workflow management, and team leadership. We value deep technical understanding of mechanical engineering, creative thinking through design, hands-on experience with the tools employed (i.e., SolidWorks), strong communication and organization skills, initiative to take ownership, proactiveness, and the capacity to lead others.

The Company:

Saltworks ( ) is an innovation-driven cleantech company located in Richmond, BC. We invent, design, and build advanced lithium refining and industrial desalination water treatment plants. Our company is growing rapidly with high demand for our needed solutions. Our engineering, supply chain, and production are under one roof, enabling efficient workflow and immediate access to the shop floor, pilots, and research and development assets.

We offer meaningful and exciting work in a collaborative environment, driven by innovation and problem-solving. We strongly value a positive attitude, hard work, smarts, and commitment to see things through. Our culture is focused on delivering excellent work with minimal bureaucracy in a fun, positive, and supportive team environment. We strongly value a sound work-life balance – ask us more about this.

Your main tasks will include:

  • Learn about Saltworks’ productions, processes, and specific value-add, in order to deliver advanced water treatment and lithium plants.
  • Lead and inspire a team of highly capable mechanical engineers, generating detailed mechanical designs while working across multiple disciplines.
  • Contribute to and lead mechanical designs of our modular products (please check our website).
  • Mechanical Engineering team tasks will include:
  • Product design reviews and integration of process-electrical-mechanical designs.
  • Plant and equipment layouts in SolidWorks.
  • Design for repeat use and robustness.
  • Piping and component design.
  • Verification of mechanical designs to ensure they are code compliant and fit for purpose.
  • Working with production during fabrication.
  • Support recruitment, retention, and career planning of team members, with executive level support.
  • Communicate risks and opportunities to senior management, while working with other engineering leaders and our Director of Production to deliver important products.
  • Optionally contribute to company strategy and innovation plans (exciting R&D for future products).
  • Ensure that mechanical engineering deliverables are high quality, accurate, and fit for purpose.
  • Contribute to improvements on engineering workflow processes.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, with a focus on quality deliverables.

You will be a great fit if you have:

  • A relevant Mechanical Engineering degree with 5 or more years’ experience.
  • A Professional Engineer registration in your current jurisdiction and the ability to register as a P. Eng. in British Columbia within 1 year (we will support that process).
  • A track record of generating quality engineering deliverables in an industrial environment, with a preference for manufacturing, building mechanical systems design, or industrial plant build and start-up environment.
  • Experience managing others, including setting work targets, completing quality assurance of engineering deliverables, communicating with external teams to refine and put sensible plans in place, managing priorities with resource load, and solving problems.
  • Working knowledge and experience within specific areas of the engineering discipline, such as ASME, B31.1, pressure piping design, heat exchangers, pumps, etc.
  • Designed integrated process-mechanical-electrical systems using SolidWorks, balancing space constraints, costs, and access for service. Knowledge of using and administering a PDM system would be considered an asset.
  • Experience turning mechanical designs into finished productions, including supporting production and installation to solve field-fit challenges.

This position also requires these universal skill sets:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and maintain a high quality of work and quickly learn new skills.
  • Impeccable attention to detail and a sense of urgency in completing projects on time.
  • Ability to work well in a team-focused environment, meeting deadlines with a quality work product.
  • Positive attitude, can-do approach, and willingness to roll up your sleeves and pitch in as required.
  • Hands-on tooling and troubleshooting skills (not essential, yet beneficial if you like this type of work).
  • Bonus: experience working with SolidWorks 3D design software or AutoCAD P&ID.
