The Manager, Operating Technology and Yard Optimization is responsible for designing and implementing terminal yard layouts as well as project management of operating technology installation onto terminal equipment. As part of CN’s Smart Terminal program within Multimodal Innovation and Optimization team, the incumbent plays a key role in enabling technology transformation and designing multiple terminals over an extended period of time. The position collaborates cross-functionally with numerous Business Units including Operations, Customer Service, I&T, and Engineering in order to design optimal solutions. Specific tasks include project managing the workstream, designing and implementing inventory storage locations and traffic flows. Main Responsibilities Design and Implement Smart Terminal Layouts
- Conduct stakeholder interviews to understand business goals, priorities and current operational challenges at the terminal
- Gather pertinent data and perform analysis to draw insights on current state material flow, volume, throughput and other constraints
- Identify the physical infrastructure changes required to support the implementation of technology and recommendations for terminal design change
- Design and recommend inventory locations and traffic flow within terminals from a process perspective
- Ensure designs follow optimization principles and maximize capacity, throughput, and productivity
- Partner with IM Planning and Development team to finalize infrastructure requirements to facilitate the tender process and implementation activities
- Develop training material for the new terminal design and ensure adoption by all stakeholders
- Collaborate with Operations team to implement optimized yard design
- Ensure optimized yard designs are accurate and updated in all relevant systems (e.g. SmartMap and the new Terminal Operating System)
- Work with cross-functional Smart Terminal program team in delivery of final Smart Terminal solutions
- Follow change management principles and adhere to Smart Terminal program timelines and budgets
Operating Technology Project Management
- Drive workstream project plans
- Support the development and adherence to business cases
- Develop installation schedules and timelines and ensure alignment with yard design principles
- Facilitate testing pertaining to Operating Technology installations
- Develop an action plan and account for all tasks related to go-live readiness
- Assist in procuring telematics equipment for multiple terminals
Work Cross-Functionally with Stakeholders
- Ensure stakeholders are aligned with yard design and implementation timeline
- Participate in regular meetings to discuss project status
- Carry out presentations with Smart Terminal team
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires occasional travel to various North American terminals (up to 25%). Requirements Experience
Terminal/Yard Design and Flow Management
- Between 5 to 10 years of experience in designing and implementing yard management flows
- Experience in supply chain, operations or transportation
- Experience in performing data analysis and conducting time studies
- Experience in developing and recommending future design concepts
- Experience designing traffic and material flows
- Experience in project management
- Experience working in a unionized environment
- Experience with Engineering design systems (e.g. AutoCAD)*
- Experience in technology transformation programs*
- Experience in Lean design principles*

- Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering or equivalent
- Master’s Degree in a related field*
- Project Management Certification (PMP)*
