General Accountabilities:
Support Senior Manager – Protection & Control (P&C) Engineering in implementing the P&C Dept.
goals/objectives/strategies by providing effective team leadership to a group of engineering & technical design, drafting, staff including contracted external engineering firms.

You will be responsible for the following:

  • Implement engineering goals/objectives/strategies by providing effective team leadership and

management direction in establishing/maintaining an effective engineering/design/analysis service for
delivering high quality projects on time and demonstrating cost effectiveness.

  • Plan, organize, schedule and coordinate work and assign tasks providing instructions to ensure that

projects achieve their deliverables.

  • Develop and maintain P&C engineering processes, policies, design templates/standards.
  • Support engineering management team by providing consolidated information on the engineering project

schedules and projected labour requirements.

  • Prepare and monitor the Dept budgets and expenditures.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Through collaborative relationships with Senior Manager and peers, within the contexts provided by the

management team i.e. corporate & division strategies and policies, accountabilities, tasks, budget and
programs, compliance and performance targets, expectations for quality & continuous improvement, etc.
to provide the followings:

  • Manage the work of an engineering design & technical team, including drafting, to deliver engineering

services involved in the estimation, design, construction, technical support, commissioning, reliability
analysis for implementation and maintenance of protection, control & metering systems.

  • Organize, plan, schedule, direct and coordinate work, assign tasks and monitor the progress of work to

meet schedules and deliverables.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the Dept.’s capability through various means (capability assessments,

quality control, process improvement, etc.) and recommend changes to enhance performance and
continuous improvement.

  • Assess the performance of staff and conduct performance reviews regularly. Initiate recommendations

on hiring, firing, transfer and promotion of staff, etc.

Recruit, interview, develop and maintain staff with the necessary technical & leadership skills to deliver
engineering services levels in the context of Transmission Engineering division and Hydro One
Corporate strategies, plans and business objectives.

  • Lead the management and development of training programs required to enhance staff capability.
  • Perform day-to-day supervision of staff, be accountable for their work assignment, monitoring &

checking of work progress and provide guidance & direction to ensure quality deliverables of the
assigned team.

  • Manage and lead to meet all health, safety & environmental requirements/regulations and other

regulatory requirements.

  • Work in multi-discipline engineering teams for complex projects. Communicate P&C engineering

requirements (roles & accountabilities) to the project engineer (PE) and staff in other departments.

  • Develop knowledge of new technologies in the field of P&C engineering. Identify, evaluate and integrate

industry best practices as they relate to P&C engineering designs and benchmark against these. Make
recommendations to change/update/improve engineering design, standards and templates as required.

  • Contribute in the development and documentation of engineering processes, systems and practices,

including new concepts, working culture, philosophy, operating and maintenance of standards and
engineering policy in the dynamically changing field of utility engineering.

  • Ensure compliance in engineering designs and applications with respect to regulatory bodies e.g. OEB,

IESO, NPCC, NERC CIP, etc.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Managerial Accountabilities:

  • Manage a team within the Dept. to achieve work programs and targets.
  • Maintain and assess staffs who are capable of achieving the results required.
  • Communicate clearly, effectively and regularly to staffs and ensure department, division and corporate

initiatives are well received and timely executed with quality.

  • Collaborate and reach out to other LOBs to build relationships and trust to improve process &

effectiveness.

  • Lead by example to provide mentorship & coaching and develop staff.

Selection Criteria:

  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario will be an asset. (non-professional

engineers will be considered)

  • Knowledge normally acquired either in a four year electrical engineering/engineering sciences university

program or the equivalent practical experience.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of design, process, standard, compliance,

construction, commissioning, operation & maintenance related to protection, control and metering
systems and facilities in Hydro One:

  • HV & LV power system protection applications.
  • Substation LAN/SCADA system applications.
  • Wholesale revenue metering system and settlement.
  • Compliance in NERC CIP, NPCC, IESO Market Rules, etc.
  • Good knowledge of the Hydro One operational requirements.
  • Good knowledge of business fundamentals and economics.
  • Good Knowledge of project management principles, tendering and contract administration.
  • Experience in providing consulting services to external customers.
  • Experience in management and supervision of engineering and other professional staff.
  • A period of over 10 years and up to and including 12 years is considered necessary to gain this

experience.
