SEM-Hatch is a joint venture between Hatch Ltd. and Sikumiut Environmental Management Ltd. providing engineering, construction and project management services in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador. SEM-Hatch is performing Engineering and Project Management Services for the Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion project. Our client is currently in the construction phase of an underground mine. This mine expansion project is expected to produce about 40,000 tonnes of nickel per year and extend the life of the Voisey’s Bay operation until at least 2032.

The field engineering student will provide technical support for the underground engineering team. This co-op position will be based at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site on 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off rotation for a duration of one academic term (4 months).

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with design engineers, field engineers and the construction team to assist with solving technical problems as they arise in the field (RFIs).
  • Ventilation work instructions
  • Ground control instructions
  • Mine planning and development of driving layouts
  • Preparing redline markups and Management of Change notices.
  • Preparing and updating various logs, registers and reports.
  • Participating in daily/weekly meetings with construction contractors.
  • Participating in constructability reviews.
  • Participating in field visits/inspection.
  • Taking meeting minutes.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a Cooperative Engineering program in the mining discipline.
  • Experience in a mining construction environment would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in Windows based applications and Microsoft Excel is essential.
  • Organizational, interpersonal communications skills, strong analytical and problem-solving skills and a proven safety record are essential.
