The Truck Driver/Helper Assistant is primarily required to assist with the pick-up and delivery services to donors, clients, and customers. The Truck Driver/Helper Assistant will exercise safe and careful driving and material handling procedures. They may also assist with the general upkeep of the facility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operations (90%)

  • Assist the truck driver with pickup & drop-off of all donations
  • Ensure safe and careful handling of all deliveries and donations, while protecting property, including donations and vehicles
  • Provide donors with courteous and diplomatic service
  • Sort and place donations in designated areas
  • Ensure that donations are unloaded from the truck by the end of each shift
  • Load and unload goods at the food bank and in designated areas within the warehouse by the end of each shift
  • Ensure that donations from donation boxes (outside) are placed in the appropriate department
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of the truck when a recycling run is required, when a trip to the dump is required to dispose of the garbage
  • Assist with the general upkeep and cleanliness of the property such as mowing the lawn, raking leaves, keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, picking up litter, emptying garbage cans and cardboard disposal, floor mopping and window cleaning as required
  • May be required to provide seasonal assistance with Christmas hampers, toys etc.

Driving (10%)

  • May drive the ministry unit’s commercial vehicle
  • May take responsibility for daily and overall safety, maintenance, operation of vehicle, and records of the vehicle
  • May be required to record information on pick-ups and deliveries, vehicle mileage, fuel costs and any problems encountered
  • May fuel the vehicle as necessary and ensure that the vehicle is kept clean and presentable at all times

Health and Safety

  • Maintain knowledge of legislative and company policies such as Health & Safety Regulations, provincial and municipal highway traffic acts
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures
  • Responsible for the following, work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness
  • Report any vehicle safety issues immediately and ensure care is taken with all equipment and property

Perform other position related duties as required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent part-time position up to 24 hours per week
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – some weekend and evening work may be required
  • Required to wear safety shoes or boots, gloves, hard hat when applicable
  • The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule
  • Ability to lift/move 50 lbs., and this job requires frequent twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, lifting, and kneeling
  • Working environment is typically in the warehouse or on the road conducting deliveries or pickups.
  • The incumbent may work under the following disagreeable conditions, odors, dirty environment, truck fumes, extreme temperature changes in walk-in refrigerator and freezer

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of secondary school, plus some specialized courses of up to six months
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Must have one (1) year of prior related experience driving a commercial vehicle
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license, provide a driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required
