Ascension Borgess Hospital is seeking a Chief of Medical Oncology Physician that will provide both inpatient and outpatient care.

�

Scope of Practice:

The Chief Medical Oncologist will provide both inpatient (IP) and outpatient (OP) cancer care at the West Michigan Cancer Center and designated local hospitals. This includes examining and diagnosing disorders and diseases of the blood, bone marrow, vascular and immune system.� In this role, the medical oncologist will provide IP and OP consults, follow up visits, ordering of appropriate diagnostic tests and be responsible for chemo and non-chemo treatment regimens while practicing alongside a well-established multidisciplinary team of specialists to deliver patient-focused care. The candidate will be the leader of their department as Medical Director for Medical Oncology, and work with fellow employed Medical Oncologists as well as employed, aligned, and private practice surgeons, Radiation Oncologists, Radiologists, Pathologists, and other clinical and non-clinical team care team members in the inpatient and outpatient settings. �

Hours of Operation:

Monday through Friday with shared night and weekend call rotation.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • The physician will see patients in the office and evaluate and initiate therapy for those patients.
  • Oversight of the chemotherapy infusion room and administration of systemic cancer therapy.
  • Responsible for appropriate documentation of initial visit, follow-up visits, procedures performed, problem lists, procedure lists, and making interim summaries.
  • Ability to perform initial histories and physical examinations on outpatients with hematology problems; make assessments and use appropriate diagnostic evaluations; and implement timely and appropriate treatment.
  • Orders diagnostic studies/tests and interprets laboratory tests, EKG, and radiology diagnostic tests (CXR, CT Scan, MRl).
  • Prescribes and refills medications within the defined scope of practice.
  • Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
  • Provides ongoing care for assigned patients.
  • Assisting in the development of new programs and clinical services, providing training to technical staff as needed, and participating in clinical research and design.
  • On a rotating basis, the physician will admit and follow patients in the hospital setting as appropriate and provide on-call coverage.

Leadership:

  • Facilitates strategic clinical relationships with physicians. Works with leadership to develop a strategic plan for growth of clinical practice.
  • Responsibilities for the overall clinical integrity of Oncology services provided within the Ascension Borgess hospital, inclusive of the planning and approval of capital equipment purchases, consistent with the overall Hospital capital plans.
  • Provides general leadership in representing the position with the departments in collaboration with the Chief Clinical Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Dyad President and division Chiefs.
  • Responsible for the overall direction of the oncology research programs within the market, including appropriate peer review publications and successful funding of research programs. Administration will provide appropriate infra-structure to assure success of the research program.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer and Service Line Dyad President, is responsible for assuring oncology departments meet or exceed all accreditation and licensing guidelines, including but not limited to the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of health Care Organizations and the Michigan Department of Community Health. Ensures that clinical programs are in compliance with governmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Is responsible to assure the oncology service line meet or exceed the expectations of Ascension Michigan as well as third parties in achieving the �Quadruple Aim� of best outcomes, best experience of care for patients/families, best experience of care for the care providers, and lowest possible cost; including documentation of quality, appropriateness, cost, value of services rendered, clinical outcomes, experience scores and any future statistics which may be required to support hospital�s position in direct contracting market.
  • Implements utilization review and quality improvement systems. Implements educational programs and offerings.
  • With the Hospitals leadership, works to ensure delineation of privileges within the clinical service lines are current and consistent with nation best practices and, implements OPPE/FPPE consistent with Ascension and Oncology national best practices.
  • Works with Ascension Michigan Market leadership to ensure a robust, just and effective Peer Review Program within Oncology service line within the Michigan Market.
  • Responsible for ensuring proper performance of the Oncology Physician staff in terms of medical record timeliness and adherence to other medical staff rule and regulations.
  • Additional responsibilities as stated in the Physician�s Employment Agreement for Professional Services.

In addition to excellent clinical skills, the ideal candidates will have strong leadership skills, interpersonal/collaboration skills, working effectively with patients, families, co-workers and other health care professionals. Additionally, this role requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment. The candidate will also demonstrate potential for professional growth and be viewed as a leader within and across a multidisciplinary team environment.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited medical school and residency program.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical oncology fellowship program.
  • Board certification/eligibility in Medical Oncology
  • Eligibility for Michigan medical licensure�
  • Progressive leadership experience
