All employees of Bow Valley College who attend our campuses will be required to be double vaccinated effective October 25th, 2021 and to provide proof of vaccination status. Reporting to the Associate Dean, Applied Research and Workforce Development, the Primary Researcher – Educational Technology works in consultation with the Associate Deans and other faculty to lead academic and research excellence and student applied research success within the context of Bow Valley College Comprehensive Institutional Plan.

In addition, this position will be responsible for providing instruction to learners; evaluating learner progress, designing and developing curriculum and instructional materials, and supporting learners in meeting the learning outcomes of their courses and programs.

The Primary Researcher – Educational Technology is responsible for applied research development. The position will contribute to the design and development of the organization’s Academic applied research profile, and lead proposal development through their academic subject matter expertise.

The Primary Researcher – Educational Technology supports effective communication and coordination between the research activities of the Schools and programs, the College, and external bodies as relevant.

Areas of Responsibility

Provides Quality Instruction in Courses as Assigned

  • Instructs courses as assigned.
  • Prepares and updates course syllabus/outline and content.
  • Creates lesson plans and course schedule.
  • Develops and updates curriculum, manuals, and guides as requested.
  • Evaluates learner performance on an ongoing basis and provides learners and administrators with learner progress reports.
  • Develops suitable assessment criteria.
  • Maintains official records as required.

Provides a Positive Educational Learning Experience

  • Meets with learners regarding any academic issues (for example: attendance; conduct, performance).
  • Identifies areas of concern and refer to the Associate Dean if follow up is necessary.
  • Refers learners to other institutional supports as required (for example: tutoring, counseling).
  • Ensures that any special student accommodations are met (for example: reduced course load, vision impairments, hearing impairments, testing).
  • Supports the program in awarding of scholarships and bursaries.
  • Participates in college and departmental events that promote learner success (for example: orientation, graduation).

Promotes Collaborative Relationships with Internal and External Stakeholders and Promotes Research and Bow Valley College

  • Keeps current regarding changes in best practice and adapts curriculum as required.
  • Assists with articulation and transfer activity for learners as required.
  • Meets with industry stakeholders and sit on Advisory Committees as required.
  • Attends external community meetings.
  • Participates in recruitment events as schedule permits.
  • Maintains a networking relationship with employers of government agencies.

Applied Research Development, Coordination and Evaluation

  • In collaboration with Associate Dean, responsible for applied research development, project management, and evaluation in their subject area of expertise.
  • Collaboratively designs and develops the organization’s Academic applied research profile under the direction of the Associate Dean, Applied Research and Workforce Development.
  • Leads proposal development through their academic subject matter expertise.
  • In partnership with the Industry Liaison Officer and Academic Leadership, supports strategic applied research partnerships for the purposes of academic research.
  • Acts as the principal investigator in research projects.
  • Provides academic applied research consultation, support to staff as needed and motivates staff members to achieve research goals.
  • Ensures effective lines of communication among faculty, staff, and other College departments.
  • Promotes a positive team environment and mentors faculty to explore funded research opportunities, research services, and course-based research for work integrated learning.
  • Active participation in ensuring goals and objectives are realized and an effective learning environment is maintained through research, innovation, creativity, and instructional excellence.
  • Mentors students in applied research activities.

Provides Research Leadership and Oversight

  • Develops the research culture in their department by mentoring faculty and supporting research projects in the disciplines of their respective program areas.
  • Ensures that research conducted by the department is in a manner that upholds the image and reputation of the College and aligns with our research pillars.
  • Leads applied research projects and leads research teams including student research assistants.
  • Participates in knowledge mobilization.
  • Works with the Associate Dean to enhance capacity of the school in applied research.
  • Develops professional development plan.

  • Models appropriate and professional behavior.
  • Articulates professional development goals.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience
  • Master’s degree – public policy, social work, or related field
  • Instructional experience with adults
  • Experience with grant funding and applied research project development and execution
  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral Degree – public policy, social work, or related field
  • Requires expertise in a broad range of qualitative and quantitative research methods, as well as excellent writing skills, including research proposals, long and brief reports, peer reviewed articles.
  • Proven success in securing external research funding (e.g., tri-council) and peer-reviewed publication.
  • Proven, in depth analytical skills, a high level of motivation and ability to see research funding opportunities is essential, as is a track record of studies published in peer reviewed academic and practice journals.
  • Experience in the successful engagement and maintenance of research collaborations and partnerships
  • Experience in the design and implementation of knowledge transfer and translation activities
  • Demonstrated PC/computer skills with solid understanding of MS Office
  • Proven communication skills, both written and verbal
  • A record of successful writing of proposals, reports, peer reviewed articles
  • A record of successful grant applications
  • Experience in leading and participating in collaborative research partnerships and knowledge transfer activities
  • Demonstrated experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods, and evaluation research.
  • Experience in a post-secondary environment with experience both in teaching and applied research would be considered an asset
