Registered Nurse, Mental Health Emergency Diversion
Your goal in this position is to provide excellent patient and family driven care, in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner. You will provide comprehensive psychiatric nursing assessments and consultation to determine the appropriate treatment needs and disposition of individuals presenting in the Emergency Department. You’re a great relationship builder, and foster close contacts with peers across the entire organization. You have great interpersonal skills, and effortlessly connect with physicians, staff, patients, and families. The position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. You will take on the shared responsibility for ensuring that health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and families.

On a practical level, you will

  • Complete a comprehensive MSE on individuals of all ages presenting to the emergency dept. in a mental health crisis.
  • In consultation with the psychiatrist you will formulate & implement a plan of care.
  • You will function as a mental health resource to the emergency dept. offering your expertise in mental health as required.
  • You will assist with the application of physical restraints as required.
  • You will work in collaboration with the Peer Navigator.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Nursing, Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Minimum 1 year of recent experience as a psychiatric nurse
  • Certification in Crisis Intervention by Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), preferred
  • Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) certification in Psychiatry – Mental Health Nursing, preferred.
  • Certificate in Mental Health Nursing from a recognized community college, preferred
  • Working knowledge of the network of the inpatient services and community-based resources for children and adults with mental health needs, preferred
  • Bilingualism in French/English an asset

This is a Full Time Regular position, 75 hours bi-weekly, 8 and 12 hour shifts, Days and Nights, including weekends in the Mental Health Emergency Diversion department. We offer a highly competitive total compensation package that may include benefits, pension, and vacation.
