Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

Position Overview:

The student research assistant will conduct mathematics research in algebraic combinatorics.

Duties:

  • Work collaboratively with the supervisor to formulate conjectures and prove new results in algebraic combinatorics.
  • Complete a thorough literature review, which will involve learning about relevant mathematics topics in order to prove new results.
  • Some programming in Maple and Python may be helpful to complete the work, but programming experience is not a requirement for this position.

Qualifications:

  • Must have completed a minimum of two years of a mathematics degree with an excellent GPA.
  • Completion of MATH-1401 and MATH-2203 with high academic standing is required.
  • Completion of MATH-3202 with high academic standing would be an asset.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Students must be approved for the 2022-23 Work-Study program. Students may be eligible for the Work-Study Program if they meet all of the following criteria:
  • Currently registered in an undergraduate or graduate program at The University of Winnipeg
  • Enrolled full-time (ex. 18 credit hours or more)
  • Completed 30 credit hours at an undergraduate level at The University of Winnipeg (or equivalent. I.e. in a graduate program)
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0
  • Demonstrate financial need (shortage between your expenses and resources), and
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person or an international student with a valid study permit.

The period of work will be from ASAP – March 15, 2023 and the estimated total hours of work will be 56 hours.

Note: This position is represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada – Research Capacity Unit.
