Job description: Position Overview

The Department of Clinical Neursciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant (Student). This Fixed Term Casual Student hourly position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to Clinical Research Manager.

This position also works closely with Principal Investigators and Research Coordinators in the unit who are involved with the University of Calgary.

Work may be repetitive at times.

Work hours may vary when required to reach changing deadlines, workloads and priorities in a dynamic research environment. This position will work for 21-35 hours per week during the spring and summer semesters and 7-21 hours during fall and winter semesters with flexibility in the schedule.

This position is only available to students registered at the University of Calgary.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Contact potentially eligible patients by telephone, or return phone calls and email,to provide them with information on relevant health research studies and initiatives.
  • Contact patients to follow-up on any health research or clinic related services the patient had expressed interest in.
  • Prepare mail-outs about research studies
  • Maintain optimal data recording practices.
  • Data entry
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Assist with lab kit preparation
  • Prepare study documents for long term archival
  • Administrative duties including; organizing and filing of confidential study records and computer technical support
  • Participate in continuing education opportunities
  • Other administrative duties as required

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Must be registered in full-time academic studies in an undergraduate or graduate program in communications, health sciences, public policy, international development / relations, sociology, governance, law, or a related field at the University of Calgary
  • Must return to full-time studies following summer placement
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
  • Possess an active interest in health research and its integration within a clinical environment
  • Be willing to collaborate with clinical staff and research personnel on various projects/initiatives
  • Be able to communicate effectively with patients and staff in person and by telephone
  • Demonstrate skills in database imputation
  • Maintains Confidentiality of Patient Information and Medical Records
  • Strong Computer Skills, Microsoft Office suite, Sharepoint experience, email and internet programs.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Cooperative and Dependable
  • Quick learner
  • Ability to work independently and interdependently within a team concept
  • Be able to Work Flexible Hours if required
  • Willing to Learn New Skills that Allow Excellence in the Conduct of the Research
  • Be willing to learn and adhere to relevant MS program Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
