Job description: The CIHR Centre for REACH in HIV/AIDS (REACH Nexus), www.reachnexus.ca, is a nation-wide, innovative, virtual laboratory for intervention research, participatory evaluation, and applied program science in HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, and other sexually transmitted and blood borne infections. We work as a partnership that includes people living with HIV/AIDS, community based organizations, front-line service providers, health researchers, and federal, provincial, and regional policy makers.

The REACH Nexus team at Unity Health Toronto is currently seeking a Junior Developer/Data Analyst to support the REACH Nexus implementation science programs. The Data Science Specialist will work collaboratively with the Director of REACH Nexus, the Research Program Manager, Community Based Organizations and government to design, develop and implement the back-end and front-end of data visualization tools (e.g. dashboards, web applications, stand-alone applications) that best meet the needs and preferences of REACH Nexus and its stakeholders. Primary responsibilities include conducting statistical analysis, creating visualizations using human factors design principles, working with the project team to understand the analytic applications and bring them to life in software, conducting / participating in design and code reviews, identifying potential problems and performance issues, providing feedback and corrections and evaluating code compliance to standards, preparation of the back-end and front-end application operational / procedural documentation for users and technical support staff and creating production ready, high quality code that can be easily maintained and shared.

The ideal candidate for this position is highly motivated, organized, attentive to detail, and demonstrates excellent communication skills. The Data Science Specialist will report to the Research Program Manager and work closely with the REACH Nexus Directors. The candidate will be supporting REACH’s two signature programs I’m Ready ( ) and Our Healthbox ( ) as well as a national HIV self testing program in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Works independently or as a team member to design, develop, test, implement and document moderately complex solutions (programs) to support REACH Nexus initiatives
  • Collaborates with team members as required to support and maintain existing production applications, in a timely and accurate manner to minimize down time.
  • Identifies, as required and schedules/coordinates problem reviews, following up on assigned actions in a timely manner utilizing expertise to resolve and/or facilitate the resolution of problems, where appropriate;
  • Collaborates with project teams to identify and define application requirements, making recommendations and outlining technical initiatives with a goal of improving current situation;
  • Takes the lead on project initiatives that can vary in scope/size as requested, providing direction, within scope of authority, as required;
  • Maintains responsibility for supporting project readiness activities, utilizing knowledge of the full range/scope of activities to ensure project success;
  • Determines and documents business requirements and specifications.
  • Contribute to manuscript writing and editing for peer-reviewed publications as well as scientific and stakeholder presentations
  • Support research processes (e.g., grant submission)
  • Chair and lead project-specific meetings and communication with collaborators

Data Science (25%)

  • Develop sound analytical plans;
  • Design, develop, clean and manage datasets and analytic plans for our projects and programs
  • Ensure adequate quality control by setting standards, monitoring results and instituting appropriate steps for data cleaning, consistency checks and other data quality control measures prior to analysis;
  • Carry out all computer programming required to execute analyses;
  • Develop efficient standardized programs, algorithms, or systems to enhance efficiency;
  • Maintain data documentation, physical and logical storage of scripts, records and master archive lists;
  • Critically appraise/edit code of trainees, students etc.;
  • Prepare findings for publications, presentations, or reports (tailored to different audiences)

Visual Design/Display (25%)

  • Develops the design and visualization of information (through an iterative design process) with engagement from key stakeholders through design sessions. However, innovative data science approaches in examining data will be encouraged;
  • Provide on-demand consultative data science expertise for ad-hoc requests;
  • Recommend data science approaches to meet team needs;
  • Work closely with potential clients to establish coding techniques and structure of dataset for studies;
  • Maintains documentation application process in a workflow model;
  • Maintains development and delivery of project presentations to various stakeholders;
  • Updates existing GIS mapping applications

Study Interpretation and Reporting (25%)

  • Develop reports of analytical findings;
  • Analyze/interpret results of research studies, and draw conclusions for review and incorporate into reports/presentations;
  • Prepare output of data science analysis for review including graphs, tables, and interpretation;
  • Ensure accuracy of all analyses and interpretation in study reports;
  • Collaborate with clients, students and other Data Science Senior Specialists on academic presentations and co-authorship of publications;
  • Critically appraise/edit manuscripts of trainees, students, etc

App Development/Testing (25%)

  • Participates in the design and debelopment of web applications, APIs, and software utilities using one or more of the following; R, Pythron, Bash, JavaScript, CSS, HTML and other we development languages, as appropriate
  • Gathers and refines specifications and requirements based on technical needs.
  • Performs user acceptance testing of developed applications to ensure accuracy and minimize potential production outages.
  • Develops and engineers technical recommendations/solutions for performance and scaling problems, along with interfacing with support staff for high level requirements, as required.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Engineering, Business or related discipline, or demonstrable equivalent combination of specialized education and experience is required;
  • At least five (5) years’ relevant experience;
  • 1-2 years of experience in developing web-based applications with cross browser and cross platform compatibility is required.
  • Intermediate to Expert-level knowledge in:
  • Web development languages, such as CSS, HTML and JavaScript and JS libraries such as JQuery, Node.js and React.js
  • Programming languages such as Python, R, Java, C#, and/or Ruby operating systems
  • At least one statistical language – R required; additional statistical language (SAS, Stata, Python, etc) preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of human factors design principles;
  • Experience with UI/UX best practices and prototyping/design tools
  • Experience using a large range of data science methods preferred, including experience in cleaning raw data, exploratory data analyses;
  • Experience visualizing data for a broad range of audiences an asset;
  • Data management and/or monitoring experience an asset.
  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively both individually and part of a team;
  • Excellent written and verbal skills and keen attention to detail;
  • Motivated, self-starting, with strong time management and project coordination
  • Experience in healthcare is an asset.
