REPORTING

The Senior Medical Director reports to the Psychiatrist-In-Chief or delegate and works in collaboration with the Program Director of the acute care Psychiatry services. The Senior Medical Director is an active member of the Child, Youth and Women’s Reproductive Leadership team, and supports the dyad leadership, and Program Management Model.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Quality of Care:

The Senior Medical Director is responsible both for ensuring the quality of care provided by the Medical Staff and for ensuring that the care provided is evidence informed, culturally safe, trauma informed and patient and family centered and shall:

  • Report to the Associate Psychiatrist-In-Chief regarding issues that may jeopardize the quality of care
  • Report to the Associate Psychiatrist-In-Chief regarding issues that may jeopardize the delivery of evidence informed, culturally safe, trauma-informed and/or patient and family centered care
  • Oversees medical audits, peer and interdisciplinary reviews, chart reviews, and incident report reviews
  • Ensures that continuous quality improvement initiatives occur within each service and that appropriate Accreditation standards are maintained
  • Attends appropriate meetings representing the Department of Psychiatry as identified from time to time
  • Collaborates with respective Program Director to ensure high quality care, and ongoing quality improvement projects

Clinical:

The Senior Medical Director shall work in partnership with the designated Program Director(s) and collaboratively with the service leads to ensure implementation of the Clinical Mission which will include responsibility for:

  • Recruitment of psychiatrists in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the hospital
  • Delivery of care and services which are culturally safe, evidence and trauma informed and patient and family centered
  • Quality of care surveillance
  • Wait list management
  • Budget planning (but not overall responsibility for the budget)
  • Management of patient/family complaints
  • Monitoring of appropriate corporate (PHSA/BCCH) indicators
  • Ensure that there is appropriate clinical coverage for all units

Academic:

The Senior Medical Director will demonstrate leadership in the development and implementation of the Department’s academic program in collaboration with the Directors of UGE, PGE (CORE, Non-CORE and Sub-Specialty) and Mental Health Research to ensure an environment that supports and fosters optimal teaching, research and knowledge translation in the following areas:

  • Undergraduate Education
  • Postgraduate Education (CORE, Non-CORE and Sub-Specialty)
  • Research
  • Continuing education
  • Development and implementation of appropriate mentoring support

Strategic Planning:

The Senior Medical Director will work in partnership with the designated Program Director(s), Executive Director, Associate Psychiatrist-In-Chief, and Psychiatrist-In-Chief to provide leadership in the development and implementation of the Department’s Strategic Plan, including:

  • Measurement Based Care, Quality Projects and Value Stream Mapping
  • Participation in Provincial level planning with community partners
  • Development of Telehealth to improve rural and remote access

Financial & Physician Human Resources:

The Senior Medical Director is responsible for:

  • Monitoring accountability data of the physicians (documentation, completion of Mental Health Act forms, e-sig, metrics, etc.)
  • Recruitment, retention and annual review of psychiatrists
  • Implementation of leave policy
  • Monitoring of adherence to the Rules, Bylaws and Policies of the hospital and PHSA and ensure completion of mandatory training on Violence Prevention and Mental Health Act.
  • In collaboration with Associate Psychiatrist in Chief, and Human Resources, first line in performance management and practice concerns.
  • Advising the Associate Psychiatrist-In-Chief about sessional allocation within the services
  • Sign off and monitoring of sessional billing

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

The Senior Medical Director acute Inpatient Services together with the Program Director(s) is responsible for:

  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency Unit (CAPE)
  • Emergency Department
  • Link Ambulatory Service
  • Child Psychiatry Unit
  • Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit
  • Consultation-Liaison Service
