The Investigator Special Investigations Unit (SIU) conducts a wide variety of specialist investigations in accordance with client requests while adhering to all governing policies, client protocols, and company requirements, and make recommendations based on findings. Must conduct all investigations in a professional manner and maintain strict confidentiality, ethics and integrity at all times. The Investigators responsibility also includes assisting the sales/marketing team to drive sales for the region and may include joining local committees in the communities or associations.
The position requires strict attention to details, good organizational skills, and a very strong criminal code, civil liability, insurance law as well as investigative acumen. The Investigator (SIU) is the primary point of contact with the client on each file that he or she is responsible for. They work closely with their investigation managers and is responsible for ensuring that the client receives a detailed and accurate report in a timely fashion and within the budget limitations and ensuring that quality in our work remains paramount.
The SIU Investigator’s role may include, but is not limited to the following:
- Coordinating the list of people to be interviewed and interviewing both police and civilian witnesses to, or participate in, the incident being investigated; obtain very detailed statements
- Engaging and retaining expert examinations to collect and document forensic physical evidence.
- Gathering and analyzing evidence in accordance with the prescribed rules of evidence and the law with respect to recognized investigative procedures and as directed by the Operations Policies of the Special Investigations Unit; photographing collisions, arson and other claims scenes to document physical dynamics of the scene.
- Putting in place certain authorizations as they pertain and relate to a claim.
Inspections of automobiles in respect to crash dynamics, arson, ignition key, locks, transponders and related systems, airbag and seatbelt inspections, as well as automotive frame and components inspections. * Inspections of building arson scenes.
- Completing advanced collision orientation drawings and other specialized drawings in regards to claim scene dynamics.
- • Interacting with claims adjusters, examiners, appraisers and claims managers with respect to recommendations, observations and updates relative to the investigation file.
- • Preparing comprehensive reports of investigations and, as may be required, to make recommendations regarding action to be taken regarding the investigation.
- The preparation of case notes and reports to be disclosed to law enforcement.
- Recommending and attending Examination Under Oaths and be a resource for counsel.
- •Perform other duties as requested by manager.
- Works with Senior Management and Sales and Marketing to create regional budget, client strategies and project plans Act as a mentor; provide junior employees with coaching, support, feedback, disciplinary action, performance assessments, etc.
- Take responsibility for the overall quality and handling of a file
- Ensure that budgets are adhered to on each file
- Ensure the time service requirements are met
- Ensure that notes are maintained and placed into the file
- Assist in marketing efforts when requested by senior management (tradeshows, client lunches, etc)
- Maintain their own personal case load
- Advise manager of any ‘no result’ files before reports are sent to clients and discuss suggestions for further handling
- Quality control reports and make necessary corrections, changes, ensure proper formatting, etc.
- Ensure that digital images have been duplicated and ready to be sent out to client with report
Professional/Technical Certification or Licenses:
- Holds a valid Private Investigator License within the applicable province of employment
- Reliable and suitable vehicle currently licensed for business/commercial purposes and a clean driving record
Job Knowledge or Work Experience
- Preference will be given to those with a minimum 5 years field investigative experience
- Former law enforcement experience an asset
- Knowledge of all levels of the Canadian court system, criminal and civil code in Canada, insurance law, and privacy
legislation an asset
- Ability to work autonomously
- Prior experience working in a client focused environment
- Understanding of threat risk assessments and analytics
- Proficiency working with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
Job Knowledge or Work Experience:
- 5 years of experience, in a specialist investigation environment, law enforcement, corporate investigation, insurance, etc.
- 2 years direct experience in special investigations.
- Experience in Workplace Harassment Investigations
Education:
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in related discipline (criminology or equivalent; Background in legal, and/or psychology etc. an asset.)
Professional/Technical Certification or Licenses: * Private investigators license required.
- Full driving license required.
- Industry related designations/member of associations an asset.
* Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of post-secondary education and relevant experience
- A strong command of the English language (written and oral) is essential to success in this role
