The Faculty of Arts and Science invites applications for the following anticipated course offering in the Fall and Winter semesters of the 2021-22 academic year. COURSE TITLE: SCTM-2002 HUMAN FORM & FUNCTION: ANATOMY
(Fall term: 2021-09-08 – 2021-12-07, Section 1: Friday 11:50 AM – 2:50 PM, Section 2: Friday 3:10 PM – 6:10 PM, Remote Delivery)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides an introduction to musculoskeletal anatomy to provide a deeper understanding of the human form based on accurate observation. Students will learn to identify the shapes underlying the surface of the figure and understand the anatomic basis of movement through a study of the human skeleton, cadaver specimens and living anatomy from models and their own bodies. While the central purpose of this course is to enhance the student’s understanding of what they see in the human form, this course will also place anatomical “facts” within a cultural and scientific context.

COURSE TITLE: SCTM-2005 INTRO COMP SCI-LOGIC & CODING

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the fundamentals of logic, and computer programming. It emphasizes object-oriented languages, allowing students to understand and later develop capacity in a wider range of programming methods. The material will be contextualized within both art and design practices, introducing students to programming for environments, objects and online, as well as practices of interaction, automation, generation, networks and visualization. Students will understand how to incorporate and recombine existing code and to use established design patterns. Basic foundational coding languages will be used to introduce key concepts that students can employ in their subsequent study of advanced programming languages. Students will be asked to bring in work-in-progress from their studio courses that can be implemented through coding.

COURSE TITLE: SCTM-2008 INTRODUCTION TO MATERIAL SCIENCE
(Winter term: 2022-01-06 – 2022-04-06, Thursday 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM, Remote Delivery)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides an interdisciplinary study of the structure, properties and applications of traditional and contemporary materials used in art and design including pigments, dyes, metals, ceramics, glass, polymers and biological materials as well as new emerging materials. The course will place materials in the historic context of technological innovation that led to the development of various classes of materials. The course will address physical science attributes such as mechanical, chemical and biological properties and their influence the performance of materials. The physical, optical, chemical properties and environmental sustainability of various materials will be examined in consideration to material selection in design and art practice.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities may include but are not limited to: attending lecture and conducting tutorials of approximately 30 students; assisting faculty with course preparation and delivery i.e. organizing course materials, and resources, based on curricular outlines provided by the supervising faculty; evaluating student work using criteria established by the supervising faculty; meeting regularly with the faculty on grading, course content and other matters as needed; working with faculty and other academic staff in support of the University’s educational goals and objectives; participating in the provision of a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community and its facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate should have a graduate degree, undergraduate degree or be currently enrolled in a relevant graduate program; a demonstrated understanding of pedagogy, e.g. course preparation, teaching methods, evaluations standards, etc., English as a Second Language training is considered an asset; strong organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills; sound knowledge of, and commitment to, healthy and safe work practices; previous teaching assistance experience at the post-secondary level

HOURS OF WORK:
Hours per week are based on enrollment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Tutorial Leader TAs are hired annually on a per-course basis with fixed-term annual contracts renewable to a maximum of 3 years. These positions are subject to budgetary approval and satisfactory enrolment levels. In accordance with the MOA, one cannot hold both a Teaching Assistant and Faculty Appointment within the same semester. Tutorial Leader compensation includes $31.68 per hour 6% in lieu of benefits plus vacation pay, as applicable, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act, less statutory deductions. As mandated by the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies (OCGS), full-time graduate students may not accept Teaching Assistant or other university related employment in excess of 10 hours per week (or 130 hours per semester).
